Gregory R. Witkowski, a senior lecturer of nonprofit management at Columbia University, is a specialist in philanthropy, disaster relief and recovery, nonprofit management, and international humanitarian relief. Before joining the faculty at Columbia, he helped found the first school dedicated to the study of philanthropy at Indiana University. Greg was selected as a Fulbright Scholar and a Young Leader by the American Swiss Foundation for his research on humanitarian relief. His research focuses on local giving in the United States, including urban locations like Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and New York City as well as rural locations. His edited volume Hoosier Philanthropy indicates that the middle class often benefited from nonprofit networks. His research on international humanitarianism includes both grass roots giving as well as the work of large-scale organizations like the Red Cross. He is grateful for the generous support he has received from granting agencies, including the Social Science Research Council, American Historical Association, German Academic Exchange, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Learning by Giving Foundation, the New York Public Library, Rockefeller Archive Center, and Columbia University.He has taught across the curriculum from bachelors to masters to doctoral students. His course on experiential philanthropy included collective grantmaking to local communities. He designed and teaches Columbia’s first course focused on nonprofit roles in disaster relief and recovery, entitled “Disaster and Community: Philanthropic and Nonprofit Engagement” and offers a co-taught course online with Columbia and Sciences Po students on Global Challenges and the Common Good that focuses on climate change and environmental justice. Greg is the book series editor of the Georgetown University Press series “Philanthropy, Nonprofits, and Nongovernmental Organizations."
