• Reopened defunct preschool: Spearheaded reopening of a community preschool shuttered for a decade by joining forces with a local volunteer teacher/psychologist. Impacted 23 preschool-age children of both Dominican and Haitian descent setting them on the right path in their educational lives. Held monthly parent-teacher meetings incorporating students’ parents to enhance program sustainability.• Summer reading club: Coordinated with school administrators, teachers, and parents to convene sessions during vacation for at-risk seventh graders. Participating students improved reading, vocabulary, critical thinking, and personal formation.• Literacy training home visits:Enhanced the culture of literacy in the community by conducting home visits and training parents/guardians/older siblings to employ literacy activities in their homes. • World map school improvement project: Organized youth to draw and paint a 6’ x 12’ world map improving the appearance of the primary school and furnishing a tool to improve geographical understanding.• After-school homework groups:Facilitated after-school homework groups to boost primary school students’ abilities in mathematics and literacy simultaneously motivating them to succeed in school. Enriched the experience with innovative didactic materials contributed by a private international school in Santo Domingo.• Young entrepreneurs course:Led a group of seven young adults from 16 to 29 years of age in a course focused on starting and managing sustainable community-based microenterprises.• HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual education youth group:Taught a course dealing with multifarious topics including discrimination, sexual education, drug abuse, domestic violence, and HIV/AIDS to a group of teenagers during their summer break. • Medical mission interpreterProvided interpretation services for primary care visits in multiple communities in the Puerto Plata area for American doctors, nurses, and nursing students.
