About Gregory Foster

I work to empower people to exercise better control over the governing processes which impact their lives. Operating at the interface between the public and the public's servants---which is more often a gap---I exercise skills in open government, journalism, and computation to create better informed and more engaged citizens. By gathering and sharing excellent contextualized and timely information, I help create the conditions for better policymaking and better policy outcomes. My heart helps me identify as a citizen first, and a journalist, too.I apply these principles at Cannabis Observer within the cannabis policymaking vertical in the state of Washington - one of the leading jurisdictions creating new laws and regulatory frameworks for federally illegal marijuana. Our simple and trustworthy commitment to creating outstanding information about cannabis policymaking for stakeholders, the public, and policymakers themselves has created lasting impact, and helped shift an unfolding policymaking dynamic towards transparency, accountability, and civility. We aim to do the same for cannabis policymaking at the federal and international levels, and are eager to learn and grow to make that happen.More ambitiously, I believe our simple techniques and tools for promoting mastery of open public meetings law and surfacing of public records are applicable in any policy vertical in every open, democratic jurisdiction. We want to be part of global solutions for journalism, governance, and civic engagement - and are eager to share the approaches we've found work.A creator and a bridge between communities, I cultivate long-term relationships built on mutual respect, compassion for the human condition, honesty, and trust. I'd welcome the opportunity to meet you, hear your stories, and learn from you as we may find we can support one another in our respective endeavors. So thank you in advance!
