A lifelong law enforcement professional, San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks represents the kind of experience and intelligence citizens expect of their elected officials. In his position since 2006, Greg Munks was formerly the Undersheriff of San Mateo County for 13 years, and prior to that, an officer in the Palo Alto Police Department for 12 years. As Sheriff, Greg Munks brings an impressive and diverse array of skills to his work. With firsthand experience in investigating everything from robberies and homicides to sexual assaults and gang crimes, Sheriff Greg Munks’ understanding of law enforcement procedures is second to none. Additional skills Greg Munks has acquired throughout his career include hostage negotiation, officer training protocols, and corrections enforcement. While still with the Palo Alto Police Department, and prior to becoming Undersheriff of San Mateo County, Greg Munks was in charge of the department’s human resources. In his role, Greg Munks developed a number of important changes to departmental policy, including establishing an innovative Internal Affairs tracking program, streamlining department training procedures, and engaging in complex labor negotiations. Through these varied accomplishments, Greg Munks obtained many valuable skills relative to the business and political side of law enforcement, in addition to his substantial practical experience. Sheriff Greg Munks is committed to the idea that law enforcement is most effective when the community is involved. As such, Sheriff Munks has been a major proponent of collaborative programs, such as the Community Alliance to Rebuild our Neighborhood project, also known as CARON.
