I got used to throwing away the instruction book.Whether Legos or K’Nex, as soon as I made my way through the instructions of the kit, I’d dismantle it, throw away the book, and build something on my own. I even created my first master plan at a young age: a multi-room-sized “town” for my matchbox cars drawn out in crayons on about forty taped-together pieces of 8.5x11 printer paper. Twenty years later, I’m a registered architect in Washington state.After starting my career in traditional design firms both big and small, I pivoted in 2022 to take a seat on the other side of the table working on the owner’s side for the Port of Seattle’s Aviation division. As someone who’s always wondered just how high they can fly, it felt only natural - I’ve always been obsessed with flight and airports: Notable memories include a long row of rocking chairs with live piano music playing at CLT, feeling like we were going to land in the water at JFK and YVR, sipping local craft brews en route between YVR and PDX, and eating at a few different dining venues I worked on that are at the airport where I now work, SEA.My job entails:1. Partnering and collaborating with design firms, engineering consultants, contractors, and Port stakeholders on small and large scale capital projects.2. Creating, editing, and updating architectural design standards and vision for the airport.3. Presenting to Port leaders and stakeholders.4. Testing new materials and finishes in the airport.5. Reviewing design packages and coordinating between existing, underway, and future projects.6. Managing, verifying, and completing conditions assessments of airport assets.7. Leading small scale in-house design efforts, from concept packages to DD and CD support.8. Obsessing over unique plane liveries and watching planes take off and land.
