I’m a librarian and technologist. I’m currently the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the National Information Standards Organization, where I work to identify new areas of the information ecosystem where standards expertise is useful and needed, and leads ongoing projects such as NISO’s participation in the Coalition for Seamless Access. Prior to joining NISO in 2019, I ran a technology consulting company for libraries, have been both an Affiliate at metaLAB and a Fellow and Affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. I spent a decade as an academic librarian in roles ranging from reference and instruction to Head of IT at the University of TN at Chattanooga, where I led the changing of the entire digital infrastructure of the library, including acting as Technology Lead on the building of a $48 million, 180,000 sq ft brand new academic library. I have written extensively on technology and libraries, including multiple books and a series of full-periodical issues on technology topics, most recently Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Libraries for ALA Techsource. Named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2009, I have written and spoken internationally on topics such as the future of technology and libraries, decentralization and the Blockchain, privacy, copyright, and intellectual property. I can be stalked obsessively online, and spend my free time with my daughter Eliza, reading, futzing about with gadgets and hardware, and preparing for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
