I work in the Behavioral Health Unit at Manchester Memorial Hospital, an adult inpatient unit focused on maintaining patient safety and therapeutic environment in order to affect positive change in their mental health status. As a psychiatric technician I work directly with patients to facilitate daily activities ranging from hygiene and meals to group activities and one on one discussion. My job is to create an environment that is safe for patients, staff and visitors while maintaining a comfortable atmosphere in order to facilitate treatment and recovery. Each day I complete safety rounds to monitor patient activity and to assure the integrity and safety of the unit itself is maintained. I speak with patients in an effort to better understand them as an individual and how they function in a hospital environment, thus improving my ability to provide compassionate, effective care. I have the opportunity to speak with them in passing, as well as in structured groups, meal times, and more formally structured discussions. It is by far the most engaging and rewarding part of my job.Outside of patient counseling I complete routine computer documentation and routine upkeep of the unit. This requires that I maintain the ability to work independently and as a team member. In times of high acuity, I must be able to multitask, prioritize and often take on a leadership role as I am one of the more senior individuals in my current position. This high stress environment has taught me how to remain calm under pressure, but more importantly I have cultivated an ability to impart a level of composure into patients and peers alike.

Understand and follow all safety precautions, including the use of multiple people to move certain equipment. Basic knowledge of sound and light controls, as well as stage queues. Camera and spotlight operation. Necessary to be able to adapt quickly as every show is different, and must maintain a professional demeanor with the talent and the audience.
