Wisconsin

In short, I made monthly magazines from scratch. I researched, reported, photographed for, self-edited, and wrote 8-10 feature stories/columns per issue of Packerland Pride, a credentialed publication centered around the Packers, their fans, history, and fan culture. I also worked back and forth at first finding, then working directly with contributors and freelancers, editing and shaping their stories to be the best they can be.I wrote headlines, cutlines, design the cover, and edit the issue for style and grammar. In addition to Packerland Pride, I oversaw editorial duties for the publications Boomers and Beyond, On the Water, and Fox Valley Wedding Planner. Organization and the ability to “switch brains” between them were crucial.Additionally, I ran Packerland Pride’s website and social media presence, posting consistent content and stories from the magazine, as well as engaging in dialogue with fans. As of this writing Packerland Pride, which launched in July ’13, had 945 Facebook Likes. I’ve made multiple appearances on ESPN Radio to discuss the Packers and promote the magazine.

During the same period in Auburn, I began working for the national sports website SB Nation, writing news stories on various topics from across the country as they happened in the sports world. I was assigned stories, then was tasked with researching, self-editing, and publishing work in time-sensitive settings. Topics covered include the 2013 NFL Draft, the NFL in general, the 2013 NBA playoffs, and more. Working here I sharpened my headline writing skills and effective keyword phrasing to earn the best position in search engines.

Overseeing the SB Nation blog network’s Memphis Grizzlies site, Grizzly Bear Blues, I worked with contributors, edited and wrote stories, and maintained a posting schedule for the site. I wrote game recaps and previews, as well as engaged with and expanded the online fan community.

Auburn, Alabama Area

I moved to Auburn, Ala., for a year, working as a sports reporter for a weekly newspaper. I won first place for Best Sports Feature Story in the 2014 Alabama Press Association awards, for a piece on the 1913 national championship Auburn football team. I was credentialed with and covered Auburn University athletics and local high school sports, as well as local entertainment. I pitched my own story ideas (rather than being assigned them), copyedited and assisted in the layout of the paper. I launched and grew the newspaper’s online presence through a website overhaul, keeping content updated, then using social media and employing search engine optimization techniques.

I wrote four to five online posts weekly for The Doctored Sports Network’s Web site on the National Basketball Association, The Hoop Doctors. I spent my time covering topical story-lines across the NBA, with the responsibility of selecting ideas and topics and presenting them in an interesting, original manner for the site.

Madison, Wisconsin Area

Receiving, processing, and inputting cases from insurance companies for an independent medical necessity review organization. I coordinated and communicated with independent doctors and case managers from insurance companies throughout the United States, setting up doctor-to-doctor case reviews, troubleshooting technical and communication problems, gathering information and assigning reviews via phone, email and the Internet.I worked with a high volume of case-sensitive and specific information under rapid turnaround timeframes. Also, I worked efficiently and quickly with others while maintaining quality work and communication in challenging situations.

I wrote and published daily posts for the website after starting as a contributor. Doing daily posts increased readership and community interaction, as did our use of social media and SEO practices. I also edited the work of other contributors.

For the daily newspaper and their website, I pitched, researched, and reported stories for the entertainment section, covering local events, restaurants, and nightlife in the Green Bay area.

As sports editor I covered athletics for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and wrote a weekly column covering a broad range of topics on the national sports scene. I wrote under tight deadlines and in short periods of time when necessary.I worked with two reporters assigned to the sports section, arranged and helped to develop story ideas based on timeliness and importance, helped solve problems with sources or writing style, and edited stories based on AP style. I arranged a lineup of stories for publication in a readable order using InDesign, balancing neatness and pertinence.
