Dining Room Manager

Waterfront Restaurant Lighthouse Inn

West Dennis, Ma

The Waterfront Restaurant at the Lighthouse Inn is a family owned restaurant attached to a Classic Cape Cod Style Inn. With guests coming from one of the 26 cottages on site or from walking down the beach. This restaurant has a capacity of over 200 which is fully utilized for weddings, private events and dining service. With a small dining room staff of approximately 25 employees we worked to make sure every guest left happy. As a dining room manager I am in charge of all operations on the floor to ensure all guests' expectations are being met and exceeded. This includes tracking hit patterns to make sure that each facet of the restaurant is prepared for rushes and is operating efficiently. Which means monitoring all servers and balancing the workload during the rush to prevent bottlenecks. It is also my responsibility to monitor the kitchen and the bar to ensure that everything is running efficiently. If at any point something goes wrong it is my responsibility to ensure that the guest who may be affected is still enjoying their visit even with a delay. This is successfully done by maintaining an open line of communication with the executive and sous chef to be able to accurately manage a timeline for guests. Not only am I tasked with observing employees but also with staffing the dining room based on current business levels and the strengths of the staff. This also includes training all new staff on dining room procedures for full service and for weddings and banquets. It is also my responsibility to manage the preparation, execution of cleanup of weddings, banquets, and full dining service. I am also in charge of completing all paperwork associated with the dining room service. This includes side work assignments, station assignments, daily meeting agendas and cash-out paperwork.

Server

Waterfront Restaurant Lighthouse Inn

West Dennis, Ma

During the summers of my Sophomore and Junior year I worked at The Waterfront at Lighthouse Inn, which has been family run for over 70 years. In my second year, I was tasked with training a lot of the new servers. I taught them how we operated and how to use our InnQuest POS system. I also taught the new servers tips and tricks on how to operate our POS system more efficiently. We had many guests who came for vacations, due to the extended nature of their stay, I would often see the same family for breakfast and dinner multiple times during their stay. The time I spent with the guests allowed me to remember their preferences and anticipate their needs. Many of the international guests wanted to hear about fun activities to take part in while they were there. So I kept up to date on the local tourism and I loved to hear how they enjoyed their trip to somewhere I suggested. The relationships I built also led to repeat customers, one time a women came in by herself for lunch and when she left she had made a reservation with me for her sister’s birthday celebration a month later. I always felt proud when the costumers were happy with their experience because I knew that I had contributed to that.I was always someone my employers could count on if something unexpected came up due to my ability to adapt to all situations. Whenever the need arose I was willing and able to step in and act as the busser, expediter, or pool server. The expediter is in charge of making sure all the food gets to the right table in the right order in a timely manner. I had ever officially trained for this position, but due to my observational nature and analytical mind I was able to successfully keep track of all orders that came into the kitchen. The pool server was in charge of running food, making drinks, clearing the tables and restocking the towels. No matter what the job entailed I was always willing to go the extra mile and this mentality is something that I strive to continue.
