Profile bio

About Gus Ferguson

I am a broad based engineer who excels in improving the reliability of machines. I enjoy the challenge of understanding machines, identifying issues and making changes that result in improved Mean Time Between Failures and Mean Time To Repair, maximizing Uptime and Overall Equipment Effectiveness.I have qualifications in both Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, with mechanical being my natural strength. I have good technical, theoretical and practical trade skills so I am able to plan and/or make changes myself. Alternatively I can lead or project manage others to make the necessary changes. My broad base allows me to identify the optimum solution (possibly with the help of specialists) to a problem while my high level of competency as a mechanical tradesman helps me to identify the optimum method of making the changes. My leadership skills help with people's resistance to change.I am also interested in the implementation of Computer Managed Maintenance Systems (CMMS) to optimize value from maintenance & engineering spend.I have experience and qualifications in project management and I enjoy the challenges of this function.

Listed skills include Reliability Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Predictive And Preventative Maintenance, Condition Monitoring, and 26 others.

Oct 2016 - Dec 2016

Mechanical Tradesman

Turnkey Engineering Services - Essential Maintenance Services

Sydney, Australia

Planning and participating in the installation, repair, and maintenance of client’s production machinery.

Dec 2014 - Nov 2015

Mechanical Equipment Manager - Cranes

Yenorra

I am 1 of a team of 3 tasked with taking over the maintenance and repairs of the site's cranes from a longstanding contractor. This role includes scheduled inspections, servicing, fault finding, breakdown repairs, sourcing of spares, liaising with operations:- all done in a safe manner. The Crane Maintenance Team has established a robust set of procedures that has improved the safety and reliability of the cranes, saved Alcoa money and meets all statutory requirements.

Apr 2013 - Dec 2014

Reliability Strategist/Engineer

Yenorra

I was tasked with identifying and mitigating reliability risks across site. High frequency/low impact risks right through the spectrum to low frequency/high impact risks;- site wide. In addition I was also assigned specific problems that needed investigation & addressing. Accomplishment examples:-- Crucible Heaters. There was a frequent failure on the crucible burner hoists that was causing downtime every 2 or 3 days and leading to wire rope failures. I gained an understanding of the problem, redesigned and altered the operation of the limit switches, thereby eliminating the breakdowns at very low expense.- Rolling mill rolls were corroding, causing an unnecessary cost (waste). I found that reversing the wrapping paper solved the problem. Cost zero–benefit–large.- Rotary Furnace. RF3 had been suffering 42 breakdown hours per week when I was asked to improve its reliability. Using engineering intuition, RCA, Pareto analysis, sound trades practices and leadership I bought the furnace to 97% reliable - using my leadership & management skills, my own practical skills and the skills of contractor tradesmen.

Oct 2008 - Apr 2013

Mechanical & Electrical Equipment Manager; Cranes Site Wide

Yenorra

I managed the repairs and maintenance of all the cranes on site by crane maintenance contractors.I successfully improved the safety, reliability and costs associated with the cranes; however I found this job unsatisfying. The role was too large to allow me to become involved in the practical & technical problems on the cranes and I was reporting to 12 different managers. The role was too clerical within the Alcoa Business Systems for me to feel properly utilised. I explained my feelings to the operations manager who assigned me to the reliability strategist role.

Dec 2007 - Sep 2008

Mechanical & Electrical Equipment Manager - Clean & Cut To Length Line

Yenorra, Sheet And Coil

This largely 2nd hand production line was being installed when I started with Alcoa. I was initially a part of the construction management team and then looked after the mechanical commissioning. After commissioning the line I continued as Equipment Manager; taking the line from initially being very unreliable to being amongst the most reliable lines on site.

Mar 2005 - Dec 2007

Mechanical Tradesman

David Power

Botany

David Power had just employed me in a condition monitoring role at a major client of theirs. Unfortunately they lost the contract so I spent some time working on the tools as a mechanical tradesman in their workshop and onsite.I knew David Power because I had frequently used their tradesmen as labour while I was Engineering Manager at Tapex.

Engineering Manager

I shortlisted and trialed several products then implemented MEX. I wrote an access importable spreadsheet that massively accelerated the detailed populating of the equipment register.Factory relocation: I was tasked with the planning and scheduling of a factory relocation from 3 properties in Botany and Waterloo to a larger property in Kingsgrove. My responsibilities in this project included:-a) The leadership of the Tapex tradesmen and contractors in the relocation of the production machinery.b) The design and project management of the installation of the:- cooling water systems, electrical reticulation systems (original 2000A supply + a 2nd 2000A supply), compressed air system, PP bead handling system and steam supply system.c) CAD drawing of all the production machinery & the factory layout, followed by project management of the relocation, installation and recommissioning of the production equipment. The factory relocation was achieved with no injuries, on budget and without customer impact.Factory Takeover: I was responsible for the technical and practical issues with relation to the takeover of a competitor’s factory and the installation and commissioning of selected machines into the Kingsgrove plant.

Project Manager

North Ryde

Employed as an Assistant Contract Manager, I was initially involved in a 250t/h boiler project in Vietnam. In Feb 1997 I was given my own project to manage; a turnkey expansion to an existing Philippine distillery plant involving a new50 t/h biogas fuelled boiler, a 4.3MW backpressure turbine generator and the auxiliary equipment. The reason that this job ends after my next commences is that I was permitted to keep my logon and keys so I could come in after work and finalise the project I had been responsible for.
