About Gusty Taler

As an organizational leader, attorney, innovator and now consultant, I welcome opportunities to share my knowledge and talents, build new skills, and enhance the quality of life for communities served. A wealth of experience and creativity is brought to any venture, and challenges are met with curiosity and integrity. My track record as a change agent achieving operational and programmatic excellence and growth is solid and my work has been recognized for innovative approaches to collaboration with community partners to drive organizational advancement. During my tenure as Chief Operating Officer for Maryland Legal Aid (MLA), a private, non-profit law firm, revenues increased by 47% due to a broadened pool of funding sources, cultivation of community collaborations, and pursuit of significant increases in existing grant/contract awards. Working with community partners, I spearheaded the launch of MLA's celebrated Lawyer in the Library project in response to the civil unrest in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray. What began as a weekly legal clinic in a West Baltimore public library is today a statewide program bringing civil legal services directly to clients in the neighborhoods where they live and work through clinics in public libraries, places of worship, community centers, and other non-profits. As a member of the Board of Managers for MLA's subsidiary, Maryland Center for Legal Assistance, I guided the program’s growth in serving self-represented litigants. Through a contract with the Courts, the program serves more than 100,000 litigants a year and features walk-in self-help centers in select District Courts and a statewide call center.Prior to joining MLA, I was Chief of Staff for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and held positions with the Women’s Law Center of Maryland (WLC), the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, and the Maryland General Assembly. In addition, I was a court-appointed mediator in Baltimore City and Baltimore County circuit courts, and practiced law as an associate and later a principal in a small firm. Through the WLC, I created the Multi-Ethnic Domestic Violence Project, the first and only program in Baltimore devoted exclusively to providing civil legal assistance to foreign-born victims of domestic violence. Funded initially through state Victims of Crime Act funds, the program continues to serve victims in Baltimore. My early career involved work in public relations/public affairs with Baltimore City Community College, Baltimore City Life Museums, and USTravel, a corporate travel company.
