The Haven is a 65-bed Modified Therapeutic Community (MTC) located in Denver, Colorado for women, mothers and their infants. Licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health, the program offers long-term, intensive treatment for clients with addictions. Clients are referred from the Department of Human Services, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the criminal justice system, homeless shelters, friends and family members, or through self-referral. Established in 1992, The Haven was the first program in Colorado to accept infants into residence while their mothers received substance abuse treatment – keeping children out of the foster care system. The Haven is part of the Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS) program of the University of Colorado Denver. Today, The Haven is three facilities located on the Ft. Logan campus and can serve up to 26 pregnant or post-partum women and their infants. Haven clients stay approximately 12 months in residential treatment, followed by an additional 12 months of outpatient MTC treatment services. Long-term outcomes are very positive. In fact, 90.1 percent of mothers who enter The Haven remain drug-, alcohol-, and crime-free two years after completion.

Beacon Center was a nonprofit agency which provided mental health care to children and families. As Executive Director, I reported to a Board of Directors and was responsible for all aspects of business operations, including programs, development and fundraising, organizational structure, human services, budget and finance, community relations, and daily operations. I took the position following the illness and death of the former ED, who had been in that position for decades. Rather than allow this to become a time of uncertainty and stagnation, I provided immediate direction and leadership, energizing the agency to streamline functions, re-engage with long-time business partners, and build new alliances. In a time of significant economic uncertainty, especially in the nonprofit human services world, we dramatically increased revenue from fundraising and grants. Particular attention was paid to maintaining and expanding the role of the Guild, a large group of community members who, for decades, had supported Beacon Center by donating time, money, and influence. Realizing that placements in residential care would continue to decline, I lead a collaborative effort to develop and open an innovative new program. The Crisis Connection Program created an alternative to hospitalization to children in mental health crisis, and was unique in the Denver metro area. I led the agency through a reconfiguration of the Board of Directors, built an effective management team, and expanded our agency’s role in the treatment community by building collaborations based on common goals and outcomes. When the Board of Directors had no choice but to close the agency due to continued decline of funding for mental health services, I directed the dissolution of the business in an orderly, ethical and responsible manner.
