My experience with a variety of organizations, public, private and nonprofit, has provided me with significant in governance, management, operations, and facilities. Decades working in human services and mental health environments and a background in facilities management gives me a unique perspective in the intersection of treatment programs and the built environment. In more than fifteen years of nonprofit management I've had the opportunity to work with remarkable people doing wonderful things, and I have a lot to offer nonprofits in creating efficient, sustainable organizations.I have also had the opportunity to work in mediation, facilitation and dispute resolution for many years, and enjoy helping people find solutions through those channels.

Working with nonprofit organizations to improve business practices, organizational development, board and management structure and relationships, facilities management, dispute resolution and facilitation of internal and external projects. Many nonprofits have great missions, led by committed people with compassion and purpose, but are lacking in good business practices or effective organizational structures. I assist them in achieving their mission by more effectively managing their businesses.Primary functions include:• Analysis of business practices, including organization structure and development, human resource and personnel management, and support services (contracting, facilities, service providers, ancillary services). • Advising and recommending improvements for all business practices. • Project management, including development of new programs, grant funded projects, organizational changes/improvements, and facility and capital improvement. • Facilitation of large and small group meetings, both one-time and short-term. • Dispute resolution, including employee/employer conflicts, contract disputes, disgruntled clients, and management disputes. • Perform both administrative and executive duties on an interim basis while permanent management positions are filled.

The Haven is a 65-bed Modified Therapeutic Community (MTC) located in Denver, Colorado for women, mothers and their infants. Licensed by the Department of Behavioral Health, the program offers long-term, intensive treatment for clients with addictions. Clients are referred from the Department of Human Services, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the criminal justice system, homeless shelters, friends and family members, or through self-referral. Established in 1992, The Haven was the first program in Colorado to accept infants into residence while their mothers received substance abuse treatment – keeping children out of the foster care system. The Haven is part of the Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS) program of the University of Colorado Denver. Today, The Haven is three facilities located on the Ft. Logan campus and can serve up to 26 pregnant or post-partum women and their infants. Haven clients stay approximately 12 months in residential treatment, followed by an additional 12 months of outpatient MTC treatment services. Long-term outcomes are very positive. In fact, 90.1 percent of mothers who enter The Haven remain drug-, alcohol-, and crime-free two years after completion.

Duties include:• Directing the organization, providing an efficient and effective work environment.• Participating in strategic planning and implementation.• Budget and finance management.• Organizational and financial analysis and evaluation.• Human resource management, including supervision, recruiting and hiring, and administering employee benefits.• Systems management, including IT, communications, and project management.• Represent the organization in the community, to other agencies, businesses, donors and the general public.• Assist with the planning and oversight of programs. Establish and execute the programmatic vision and strategic direction of programs • Participate in fundraising, events, marketing and grants.• Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors, stand in for CEO in her absence.

Single Parents Empowered started in 2008 as a unique nonprofit which provides one-time, emergency support for single parents who are independent, self-sufficient, and heads of effective, healthy family units.

Beacon Center was a nonprofit agency which provided mental health care to children and families. As Executive Director, I reported to a Board of Directors and was responsible for all aspects of business operations, including programs, development and fundraising, organizational structure, human services, budget and finance, community relations, and daily operations. I took the position following the illness and death of the former ED, who had been in that position for decades. Rather than allow this to become a time of uncertainty and stagnation, I provided immediate direction and leadership, energizing the agency to streamline functions, re-engage with long-time business partners, and build new alliances. In a time of significant economic uncertainty, especially in the nonprofit human services world, we dramatically increased revenue from fundraising and grants. Particular attention was paid to maintaining and expanding the role of the Guild, a large group of community members who, for decades, had supported Beacon Center by donating time, money, and influence. Realizing that placements in residential care would continue to decline, I lead a collaborative effort to develop and open an innovative new program. The Crisis Connection Program created an alternative to hospitalization to children in mental health crisis, and was unique in the Denver metro area. I led the agency through a reconfiguration of the Board of Directors, built an effective management team, and expanded our agency’s role in the treatment community by building collaborations based on common goals and outcomes. When the Board of Directors had no choice but to close the agency due to continued decline of funding for mental health services, I directed the dissolution of the business in an orderly, ethical and responsible manner.

My role was specifically designed to run the business operations of the nonprofit agency, allowing the Executive Director to focus on the areas of her strength – fundraising and program operations. I streamlined and made more efficient every aspect of business operations, from managing contracts to accounting and finance to human resources. I assembled a team of professional staff and created a significantly improved business support structure. As the Executive Director became ill, my role continued to expand, providing significant direction to program and treatment staff, supporting development and fundraising and working directly with the Board of Directors.
