Director Of Olympic Development (High Performance Director)

Huntington Beach, Ca

Following the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, I became the USAWP's Director of Olympic Development overseeing the Olympic Development Department. This was an innovative, new position and department for USAWP. I successfully led the merging and unifying of eight major USAWP men's and women's programs: Senior National Teams, Pipeline National Teams, Olympic Development Programs (ODP) and Events. In addition, the Olympic Development Department supervised coaches and referees education and development. Other key accomplishments: • Launched ODP and oversaw the phenomenal 112% athletic growth from 800 athletes in 2009 to over 1700 in 2012• Built ODP into a truly National Program with 1700+ athletes, 200 coaches, 4 National Directors, 20 national/regional staff and 120 teams competing in the 2012 ODP Championships. • Expertly designed, implemented, managed and evaluated a seamless and vertically integrated USA Water Polo System with the pathway beginning at the ODP Zone level and leading all the way to the Olympic Team level. • Partnered with USAWP administration in developing and evaluating the four-year rolling and annual High Performance Plans which were submitted to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) for performance review and funding. • Started the annual ODP Summit, National Teams Selection Camps and “It Starts with Coaches” Initiative. • Oversaw the very successful expansion of the annual Holiday Camp to include a girl’s only camp and specific coaches and referees professional development components.

Oct 2008 - Jun 2012

Women'S National Teams Director (High Performance Director)

In January of 2001, I decided to no longer split duties between UCLA and USAWP in order to become a full-time employee of USAWP by accepting a brand new position as Director of Women's National Teams and Head Coach of the Senior National Team. My primary responsibilities were to oversee the Women's Pipeline National Teams, establish new educational and development programs and continue leading the Senior National Team. During this time period, USA Women's Water Polo became the best women's water polo country in the world winning thirteen medals with the closest competitor winning eight medals. Other key accomplishments:• In 2001, produced "Mission 2012" a ten year high performance plan for USAWP Women's National Teams including implementing an operational and performance structure, educational programs and specific standards for American girls and women to succeed at the highest international levels. • Built the first seamless and vertically integrated Athlete Development Pipeline for USAWP. The Athlete Development Pipeline joined and unified the Age Group Zone Teams to the Age Group National Teams to the Senior National Team and ultimately to the Olympic Team. Integration included tactical, physical, technical and psychological standards, evaluative selection process and instructional manuals and videos with hands-on coaching development and mentoring. • USA Women's Junior (20u) National Team won gold medals at the 2001 and 2005 Junior World Championships.• Established Programs for Coaches and Athletes Education (P.A.C.E.) as a national program that included clinics, camps, national and international coaches conferences and instructional videos .

Jan 2001 - Sep 2008

Head Coach Women'S Senior National Team

I was the Senior National Team Head Coach from March of 1998 through the 2004 Olympic Games and returned to the team in September of 2005 through the 2008 Olympic Games. We were able to rapidly elevate the team's performance taking over a team ranked 8th in the world to the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games to the highest medal winning team in the world. Selected accomplishments:• Three Olympic medals at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics Games. • Currently the only women's Olympic Coach to lead a team to three consecutive Olympic medals. • Two World Championships titles at the 2003 and 2007 World Championships. • During my tenure, Team USA won 10 FINA championship medals; five gold, four silver and one bronze, the most gold and overall medals during this time.

Mar 1998 - Sep 2008

Head Coach Men'S And Women'S Water Polo

Los Angeles, Ca

As Head Coach of both the UCLA men's and women's teams, UCLA became the dominant water polo program in the 1990's. During my tenure at UCLA, we won seven National titles-four Men's NCAA Championships (1995, 1996, 1999 and 2000) and three Women's National Collegiate titles (1996, 1997 and 1998). I quickly resurrected the men's program in 1991 after it was originally dropped and led the team to the 1991 NCAA title game. Following the 1991, the program undertook a substantial rebuilding effort culminating with the 1995 NCAA title, the first for UCLA since 1972. I started the women's program for the 1995 season and led UCLA through the 1998 season. In March of 1998, I was named Head Coach of the USAWP Senior National Team. I split duties remaining the Head Coach of UCLA's men's team and coaching USAWP's Women's Senior National Team. Seven of my UCLA athletes-four men and three women- were selected to represent USA at various Olympic Games totaling thirteen appearances. In 2014, I was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
