(1) Directed the ConocoPhillips/Phillips 66 CFD Modeling Group and personally provided CFD modeling support for the following projects: a) Alaskan Kuparuk oil tank separator revamp to recover 1,000 barrels/day crude oil from production water stream ($32MM/yr), b) Alaskan Kuparuk CPF2 oil tank separator design modification ($130MM NPV), c) Refinery vapor/liquid quench rules-of-thumb evaluation ($3MM/incident LPO), d) Melaka Refinery sulfur recovery unit (SRU) furnace metal hotspot investigation, e) Next-generation E-Gas gasifier technology development ($3.75MM economic impact), f) Coke drum feed-nozzle design improvements ($315MM NPV), g) Water jet droplet size distribution prediction that resulted from wall impingement through a turbine air chiller inlet, h) Refinery flare study to evaluate an EPA consent decree that required $1.5MM stack emission instrumentation to monitor flare combustion efficiency ($96MM economic impact), i) LNG piping configuration evaluation for mixing cold process steams, j) Bayway Refinery CO boiler wet gas scrubber process duct configuration evaluation, k) Wood River Claus furnace outlet flange metal hotspot evaluation ($275M economic impact), l) Wood River sulfur tank purge design evaluation for controlling the H2S concentration below its lower explosive limit, and m) Borger Refinery coker fractionator third-stage coke-fine plugging evaluation reportedly caused by faulty liquid spray nozzle injection design ($10MM/incident LPO).(2) Successfully built the CFD modeling infrastructure (1536-processor Linux cluster, 42 ANSYS serial licenses, 1500 ANSYS parallel licenses) to provide corporate-wide CFD modeling support.

(1) Successfully directed the experimental detonation test program for safely mixing hot natural gas/oxygen streams in the Conoco/COP Natural Gas Refining (NGR) process.(2) Successfully developed the semi-works-scale and commercial-scale natural gas/oxygen mixer designs for the Conoco/COP Natural Gas Refining (NGR) process using computational fluid dynamics.

Coordinated the successful construction, startup, and operation of a $6MM, 24 hr/d alternate Freon (HFC-134a) pilot plant. The assignment required directing 14 operators and three engineers in support of the HFC-134a process development. (2) Developed applied research project cost proposals and successfully secured two. The assignment required developing contacts, writing proposals, making presentations, and estimating project costs. (3) Directed the successful completion of a 5,000 psig hydrogenation pilot facility.

Directed and successfully completed a six week, 30 - 40% NOx reduction test program on commercial-scale, roof-fired and face-fired utility boilers.

Directed and successfully completed a stoker-fired utility boiler plume opacity study which verified sulfur trioxide condensation. The assignment included directing a 13 member sample team; boiler, stack, and plume data evaluation; technical presentations to customers; and writing a final report. (2) Co-lead a commercial-scale electrostatic precipitator trouble shooting team which determined that skewed inlet sulfur trioxide concentrations profiles were causing poor precipitator performance. The assignment included test program development, field testing, data evaluation, computer modeling, and technical presentations.
