In my professional career, while attending the University of Utah from 1981-1985 (4 years). I was 21 working a UU, promoted from a "Programmer Analyst" to a full-time "System Programmer" in the U of Utah's Administrative Computing Services, the Manager of Tech Svcs at 23. My department ran a smaller IBM 4381 mainframe for grades and payroll. As a system programmer, I learned Assembler language, wrote editors, and mainframe side socket layer API's for the new and upcoming IP based traffic from "phone student registration system, and student web registration." At age 24 I was moved up to 'Manager of Technical Services" with 4 'System Programmers' to run IBM's MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) later to become today's IBM ZOS. At age 24, an inflection point in my life happened in 1989. My director asked: "Guy, do you think you and your team could run an IBM Supercomputer?" And after saying "Yes", and I moved into research super computing began. IBM's VM's running MVS, and AIX.Next came RISC Clusters (IBM SP2 w/ AIX), along with SGI Origin w/IRIX (renamed CRAY), Sun 10K w/Solaris, Dec/Alpha/Quadrix running TRU64, and now X86 based linux clusters. Then I joined Dell for 6 Years doing HPC, spent about a year as part of a leading edge Memory fabric/disaggregated startup GigaIO - focus on AI, HPC, and VDI.And now have joined with Kalray - which acquired Arcastream offering parallel filesystem storage and true HSM, and more, here in the United States.
