Lead officer in preparing the Somerset Minerals Plan, researching and drafting planning policy on quarrying for crushed rock, building stone, peat and oil and gas extraction (including fracking for shale gas and coal bed methane extraction). This role entails setting the work programme on the Plan for the planning policy team, taking a central role in preparing and editing the Plan, and managing the budget for its delivery.The Minerals Plan was adopted by Somerset County Council in February 2015, following public hearings in September 2014 during which I took the lead in representing the Council on a range of issues.In addition to basic day to day responsibilities, I am the Chair of the South West Aggregates Working Party (SW AWP) and deliver the same role (though not formalised) for the South West Waste Technical Advisory Body (SW Waste TAB). Also I convene an Energy Minerals Officer Working Group, which operates on a sub-regional basis and represent SCC on the Nuclear Legacy Advisory Forum (NuLeAF) Steering Group, Hinkley Point Site Stakeholders Group and at meetings of the Planning Officers Society (POS) groups on minerals and waste.

Lead officer for Somerset County Council in submitting the Waste Core Strategy Development Plan Document to central government and in representing the County Council during public hearings in July 2012. Covering all waste types (including radioactive waste), the Waste Core Strategy was adopted by Somerset County Council in February 2013.

Lead officer in preparing the Waste Core Strategy Development Plan Document, published in October 2011, informed by consultation undertaken in early 2011. Preparation of the Waste Core Strategy adhered to an exceptional tight timeline, due to legislative and financial drivers.

I developed a two-year programme of work that supported improved waste management in new urban development. Key objectives include the implementation of site waste management plans and exploring the foundations for integration of energy recovery from waste on a local scale.

I established my own company, specialising in writing and editing environmental literature, principally working with local authorities and research consortia. Wellington Green Limited was set up to support clear writing in technical and non-technical documents dealing with a range of environmental issues, from waste management to climate change.

Responsibilities included:• Editing a bimonthly international magazine (BPA audited: in 2006 the official circulation was 8600 qualified and 4149 non qualified i.e. over 12,000 worldwide) and monthly electronic newsletter (circulation 10,000) on solid waste management (www.waste-management-world.com)• Writing articles on key topics in solid waste management for publication• Commissioning articles on key topics in solid waste management, working with the foremost international experts in their field• Researching and writing waste management news for global publication• Liaising with advertising sales team, ensuring that they are fully briefed on forthcoming content and that we work effectively as a team• Acting as the figurehead for the magazine at events throughout Europe and the USA

Responsibilities included:• Interviewing larger businesses across Somerset to discover how much waste they produce, of what sort and how they handle their different waste streams• Researching how Somerset County Council itself handles its own waste, collating information from the various arms of the Council across the County• Informing the County’s future waste policy, helping to provide a platform on which new waste management and recycling infrastructure can develop within the county of Somerset• Writing a review of waste technologies available to the County, informing both the Council and the broader public about what is possible

Responsibilities included:• commissioning new books on renewable energy, sustainable architecture and heritage conservation• commissioning articles for a bimonthly international magazine• developing the company’s international journals programme• editing submitted content, adapting text according to house style and ensuring clarity in expression• working with in-house departments, including production, sales and marketing

A temporary post, during which I prepared sales and marketing plans having appraised brand, sales and infrastructure.

Within two years of working for RSP Ltd. I was managing the company’s publishing programme and day-to-day running of the business. The book list included over 100 titles and 40 book series, specializing in engineering. My work included commissioning new book series and titles, editing manuscripts (checking grammar, spelling and style) and setting up and maintaining RSP’s website.

I began working for the company on a short term voluntary basis and was soon offered a permanent position.
