The primary role was overall project management involving:• Setting the overall goals• Planning for and keeping to a timeline to allow for the design, manufacture, testing and competition for a small racing car with a fixed competition date to be built from the ground up.Also:• Welding• Sheet metal manufacture• Fibreglass mould manufacture• Jack of all tradesDesign phase included:• Integrate the various sub-assemblies in CAD and ensure that parts were… Show more The primary role was overall project management involving:• Setting the overall goals• Planning for and keeping to a timeline to allow for the design, manufacture, testing and competition for a small racing car with a fixed competition date to be built from the ground up.Also:• Welding• Sheet metal manufacture• Fibreglass mould manufacture• Jack of all tradesDesign phase included:• Integrate the various sub-assemblies in CAD and ensure that parts were manufacturable, didn't interfere with other components (while considering the dynamic movement and deformation from the stresses involved in a racing car) and that drawings were suitable in cases when external manufacturers were employed. • Management of the various sub-teams was required to keep the car meeting the big picture requirements and inevitable compromises between cost, time and functionality managed.Manufacturing phase:• A broad hands-on role was required in a wide range of fields to fit the dynamic personnel/resource needs. This included engine assembly, composite manufacture (fibreglass and carbon fibre), wiring, welding the rule mandated roll bars and assorted bracketry amongst others.Testing phase:• Management of safety issues, ensuring everything required was transported to the testing locations and dealing with equipment failures uncovered during testing. There were a number of engine failures which required complete engine changes to be done overnight as well as helping to sort out the various gremlins that appear during this phase.Competition:• Planning to asses and cover the possible and likely issues that would occur and making sure backup plans and components are in place. • A failure occurred in one of the two endurance events which was fixed in time for the second.• The team finished all events and came 10th in a field where 2/3rd of entrants didn’t finish all the events.
