Tencent QQ also uses UDP mode for messaging between clients, which is different from the foreign ICQ which uses TCP for communication between clients. Because the network environment in China is very complex, and many users share a line through a proxy server, the probability of establishing a TCP connection between clients in these complex situations is low, which seriously affects the efficiency of message transmission. Since UDP packets can penetrate most proxy servers, we chose UDP as the main communication protocol between clients when developing QQ, so users will find it faster than ICQ and other ICQ-type software that uses the TCP protocol to send messages. Of course, the advantages of the UDP protocol are obvious, but so are its disadvantages: the transmission of UDP packets is an unreliable transmission, unlike TCP, which has mechanisms such as packet retransmission, so messages using the UDP protocol are easily lost during transmission. In the old version, the server did not control the transmission of messages sent to the client due to the heavy load, so in the old version, the messages were easily lost through the server. After QQ99c 0725, we set up a few dedicated servers to relay messages (only between 99c messages) using the packet retransmission mechanism to ensure that messages forwarded through the servers are also sent to the other party's QQ.
