This role as a laboratory technician was very cross-functional. I worked with a team of four to maintain and run our insectary, rearing and maintaining high quality insects for in house testing. The insectary included a complex array of common pest species including German cockroaches, American cockroaches, darkling beetles, various weevils, mosquitos, bed bugs and a number of ant species. As a team, we conducted efficacy testing on these insects using all different application methods used in public pest control industries. These applications included residual, direct spray and baiting. As a cross functional team, we worked closely with chemistry to solve formulation issues, with regulatory to meet EPA testing requirements, and with our sales advisory team to solve problems customers and pest management professionals encountered with our products. I extended my role as a lab technician to Chemical Hygiene officer, representing the R&D portion of our lab. I also partnered with our EHS director to manage our hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal. I created extensive training documentation, and conducted many of the hands on training sessions with four technicians myself.

Samples are prepped according to type, testing, and storage areas according to protocol. All procedures are recorded in the Laboratory Information Management System. Miscellaneous jobs include processing freight, sample management and storage after testing, and general cleaning throughout the lab.

I have worked through community outreach, student surveys, and my own personal experience to increase the rental housing energy education in Morris, both among the college students and the rest of the community. Reaching out to the Morris Housing Rental Association and the Morris City Manager, I have built an understanding of current education and general knowledge of energy systems in rental houses of tenants.

I sampled native and invasive plants to form the first herbarium collection of the University of Minnesota Morris EcoStation, which is located near Ashby, MN. I also furthered work of previous students adding content to the website and creating a plant list with photos and species information.

Throughout the summer of 2016, I worked under Dr. Peter Wyckoff sampling trees, soil and conducting data analysis. His research entailed examining the effects of dear herbivory on native Minnesota trees and the invasive European Buckthorn, while simultaneously looking at light availability, soil nutrients and the presence of invasive Eurasion Earthworms. My project specifically included a more rigorous data analysis of 3 different earthworm species of which I personally extracted, preserved and identified. A mixed model analysis was created to examine the significance of various different environmental factors as well as the population abundance of the previous sample. The research grant included the assembling of a conference poster, which I took to the SACNAS 2016 National Conference in Long Beach, California.
