About Hamish M.
Originally from New Zealand, I started building medical software to serve clinicians and patients in Japan from the early 2000s. I am an entrepreneur that loves the challenge of getting crazy ideas to market and then scaling them to be global products that have the potential to change how an industry thinks and operates for the better.Every truly disruptive innovation starts right out at the edges of society, and has to work its way inwards. Working your way inwards to create value is the entrepreneurial challenge. But changing how the inside works for the better is the ultimate challenge. What you originally imagine your product to be never survives first contact with the marketplace - so create enough runway and summon the nerve to learn and iterate, over and over. Paul Graham sums it up nicely, "Build something people want, and be relentlessly resourceful". Money is very nice indeed, but genuine satisfaction from a job well done is deeper.

Founder & Ceo
CurrentAt The Sovereignty Network my passion is for people to be able to control and benefit from their healthcare data, allowing the data to flow where it needs to go, to whom it needs to go, when it needs to go. This allows bridges to be built between patients and the wider healthcare ecosystem.Creating a healthcare data economy that works for patients and those that serve them is my driving ambition. The Sovereignty Network believes that a copy of your data should belong to you. And you should be rewarded from the use of that data, because that copy is your personal asset. Our Mission is to help people Get, Own, Share and Profit from their healthcare data. Any data, from any source, from anyone and anywhere - and build an economy based on that data that works for patients and those that serve them. Currently in private beta. Incorporating standards-based data including FHIR and SNOMED CT.
Ceo And Founder
Founded and built The Diary Corp, becoming an Apple Enterprise Mobility Partner building best in class iOS healthcare solutions. The Diary was featured on the Apple.com/healthcare homepage for several years. In partnership with Apple, Telstra, Cisco, Airwatch & Entag, several large healthcare systems in Australia used the solution as a turnkey virtual hospital and remote monitoring system to connect patients, caregivers and clinicians.
Learning To Code
At a Japanese "forget the year party" (Bonenkai), the salesman / marketer in me had an epiphany on December 27, 2006 - that everything in the world was going to be "virtualized" through code. This meant you could change the design of everything - including business flows. So I took a few years off, found a great mentor and learned to code. I then headed off to live in Bali for a year to learn how to program manage through inviting programmers from around the world to build new products with me on the property. They got Bali, I got code! I built full LAMP stacks (Python on top), created instances on Amazon just after they went into the cloud hosting business, and I particularly spent a lot of time learning the history of computer languages and how they developed and branched off of each other - and what each was suited for as a tool. Three years of incredible learning, and I came away from it with a profound respect for the level of intellectual honesty and perseverance it takes to paint and hack great code (Thx Paul Graham). Plus I learned how to talk with and understand programmers - something that every single day while building companies that build great software I am glad to have done.
Managing Director Of New Business
Built and managed a sales team of a US company that manufactured health products as it entered Japan for the first time. At peak my team drove 80% the company's sales in Japan.
Ceo
My first tech startup. A novel application that allowed consumer points (a USD$60 billion industry in Japan even back in 2003) to be aggregated through a proprietary exchange rate server. The original product was developed in partnership with NEC Engineering (Tokyo). A product idea that was probably 5-7 years too early for the market. Lessons learned.
President / Founder
Saizen was my first startup, a PR and market entry consultancy to introduce and sell products for foreign companies entering the Japan market (particularly health-oriented products). Saizen became the top performing ad agency for The Japan Network Journal and Naotta, Japan's first alternative-health monthly magazine. Clients included several US NASDAQ listed companies.
Sales Rep.
I cut my initial business teeth during this period, learning to sell, market and lead teams. At age 27 I became the youngest to achieve the top sales rank for a company that I helped establish in the Japan market. My team and I created the initial sales materials and we became one of the best performing sales groups in the initial years, with the Japan branch growing to be the 4th biggest company in the local industry with $600 million in annual sales. These efforts were recognized with awards for Production for outstanding sales efforts as well as receiving the company's global Leadership award for assisting the company to establish a successful presence in Japan.
