The properties of materials on macro, micro and nano scales play a fundamental role in dictating the overall performance of parts and components that make up the world around us. Characterizing those properties, tinkering them to our requirements and designing all-new materials with highly desirable properties require the knowledge and skillset I have acquired over the course of my PhD education and training. My PhD research focuses on using failure analysis to design materials for structural applications with enhanced mechanical integrity and performance. To this end, I have made extensive use of experimental techniques including advanced microscopy (SEM, EBSD, EDS, TEM) and multi-scale mechanical characterization (micro and nano indentation, and micro and macro scale tensile testing). Moreover, I use the latest in situ SEM tensile testing techniques to directly observe the spatial and temporal evolution of materials under mechanical loading.More specifically, I have worked on developing versions of nickel-base superalloy 718 which have a higher resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. The interaction of dislocations with the alloy’s microstructure has a deterministic role in dictating its resistance to hydrogen-induced damage. Since the interactions of dislocations with other dislocations, precipitates and grain boundaries determine the mechanical properties of all metals, the tools I have developed and used for this research are directly applicable to alloy design of various families for diverse applications. I intend to take my skills to the industry and spearhead materials design using these innovations and those of the wider research community.

Working as a process engineer in a dry etch module development role. Contributing to both sustenance and development projects.
My PhD work is focused on failure analysis to enable design of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) resistant variants of nickel base superalloy 718 using unique processing methods. I use advanced characterization techniques including SEM, EBSD, EDS, TEM, in situ tensile testing, nano-indentation and micro-indentation to understand inter-play of failure mechanisms with the microstructures.Failure due to hydrogen embrittlement occurs at microstructural “weak links” e.g., grain boundaries, phase boundaries or dislocation slip bands depending on the microstructure of the material, thermal history, hydrogen concentration and other factors. The goal is to develop a better understanding of failure mechanisms to enable design of HE-resistant microstructures.
