For three years, I worked in the Sexual and Gender Diversity Lab at the University of Guelph on a project about drag performance. Drag has become a part of mainstream media thanks to competition shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. However, our team’s goal was to look beyond drag as a form of entertainment and instead expand our understanding of it as a legitimate and unique occupation by examining various employment-related challenges (e.g., poor compensation, job insecurity, workplace aggression/violence) and rewards (e.g., emotional fulfillment, support networks) commonly experienced by drag performers. Our intention in taking this approach was to depart from the extant academic literature on drag which tends to focus on gender identity and expression.My responsibilities: - Performed a literature search of academic and news articles covering issues related to drag performance.- Gathered data by utilizing a deductive thematic analysis approach.- Helped manage a team of undergraduate coders who were supporting the data collection phase.- Helped develop a Qualtrics survey and interview guide which sought to understand participants' personal experiences working in drag.- Aided recruitment efforts for the study on social media platforms.- Received training in conducting qualitative research interviews about potentially sensitive topics.

I have worked in the Self-injury & e-Mental Health Lab at the University of Guelph as a volunteer research assistant for various projects related to suicidal and non-suicidal behaviors.My responsibilities: - Was one of multiple coders for a thesis that reviewed the representation and interpretation of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) in academic literature and a dissertation about the connection between suicide and rurality.- Performed quantitative content analyses on peer-reviewed articles to categorize variables of interest and reveal patterns in how constructs were defined/measured.- Supported the recruitment process for a project that seeks to equip Residence Assistants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be self-injury and suicide interventionalists.
