FacultyStiles Machinery 2013 - PresentGrand RapidsAs a faculty member at Stiles Machinery, I teach classes on CNC programming and operation. The CNC types that I teach on are nested based, point to point (pod & rail), and vertical CNC machining centers. There are several models of machines, but most of them are from Weeke which is a part of the Homag Group out of Germany. Additionally, I teach classes on Electrical Troubleshooting and European Schematics. This class introduces students to electrical troubleshooting for panel processing equipment. I instruct the students on the differences between alternating and direct current, voltage, resistance, power, single phase and 3 phase power, and safety. We also go through components and how the components function and work to make the equipment operate properly. One very enjoyable aspect of the class is that we will literally go out and work on panel processing equipment. I will "break" the machines in some fashion, and then help guide the students through the diagnostic/troubleshooting process. Another class that I teach is Industrial Pneumatics. In this class students learn how to read pneumatic schematics and they learn the differences between pressure and flow and why certain flow control valves are put in particular places on machines. Students also learn about valve types and nomenclature, and what the port designations mean on different types of valves. I also lead what we call Technical College, which is a very intensive 2 week training session for our Field Service Representatives. In this course, we get pretty technical into motors, drives, PLC's, inverters, and many other components found in a manufacturing environment. Another role that I have is serving as the National Service Training Coordinator for our internal employees. In this position I schedule and set up classes to ensure that our FSRs get the training they need for all of our equipment. Often times this means the training is in or comes from Germany. -
Service ManagerCriterion Manufacturing Solutions Feb 2000 - Jan 2013Comstock Park, MiService Manager/Field Service Representative for Criterion Manufacturing Solutions. I dealt with customers on a regular basis, either repairing/calibrating equipment or touching base to keep healthy relationships going. This job gave me the privilege to build, setup, maintain, diagnose, calibrate, and repair almost any type of automated equipment. I would work on large CNC machines, sonic welding CNC machines, CMM's, automated weld cells, simple I/O assembly line equipment, packaging lines, end of arm tooling, and many other machines found in an industrial environment. Troubleshooting and diagnostics were a regular part of my job. I gained a lot of experience working with some of the most delicate parts of the machines that we built or serviced. This allowed me the opportunity to become very good at working with complicated diagnostic/calibration equipment. The equipment included oscilloscopes, laser interferometers, ball-bars, laser alignment equipment, and a lot of different software to name some of what I used to deal with. I would also regularly make board level electronic repairs. These repairs would generally consist of diagnosing the bad components and then unsoldering and replacing them. Integrated circuits, transistors, resistors, switches, and sockets to name some of the components. Perhaps the best part of this position were the relationships that I built with our customers. Not only did I speak with our customers on a regular basis, but I was typically their first point of contact. Our customers felt very comfortable speaking with me and they grew to both trust and depend on the service/information that I provided. Often times this relationship proved to be the means to further equipment sales. I often dealt with owners, managers, operators, maintenance personnel, and many others at the companies we provided machines/service for. It was especially rewarding when I would be asked to repair equipment that we didn't build.
