I have worn many hats in my relatively short time on this planet: food service, customer service, hospitality, administrative support, research, tutoring, and mentoring to name a few. As someone who finds almost any subject fascinating, I often find myself struggling to decide what I should do for my future. With so many options available, I choose to focus on the one concept that is central to who I am as a human being: mentoring and advocating for people gives me a sense of fulfillment.In all of my jobs, I have found purpose in finding ways to go above and beyond to show my client that they are valued and supported. Food and Customer Service is often written off as a menial job, but the true value in it that I noted was that when I was kind to someone and offered a smile, I made a difference for that person. Research and Data help me make sense of the world. I went into psychology thinking that I would end up a counselor, but I fell in love with the science and data of human behavior. This ability to understand a person through patterns and see those patterns represented in data has been an essential skill that I have used in all of my employment opportunities since graduating college. Becoming a tutor at a college planning center after college gave me the opportunity to expand my skills and professional passion. Being able to work one on one with a student to identify what they need to succeed and work with them through each step toward that student’s individual success further fueled my professional passion. Often students lack someone who will work with them and modify a plan to their needs, especially students who are neuroatypical. I found that what these students really need is someone to care and to champion for them every step of the way. As I consider my professional future, I know I want to fill it with a life of advocacy, especially for those who aren’t able to effectively advocate for themselves
