Moving to Australia gave me the space to find my dream career.I fell into nursing following my career interview at 17. It seemed like an appropriate carer choice given my love for biology and my caring nature. I'm often asked, why I switched to teaching. In truth, teaching had been my first choice of career. My sports teacher at the time put me off this idea when he told me that it was a young person's career and that I would have to do something else later in life. Working in a busy critical care unit was bittersweet. I quickly learnt how to work in a pressurised environment. Being part of a team helped me get through the darkest moments and taught me the importance of developing a great team, but something was missing. Then I started being responsible for teaching nursing students, and everything changed. I loved this part of my role more than nursing itself. So I leapt and became a student again, retraining as a high school science teacher. Being a teacher is one of my proudest achievements. Seeing thirty faces looking back at you, hanging on your every word, is one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had. I feel great joy when I reflect on the light bulb moments I inspired and the times I supported students navigating their school years. After fifteen years of working in education and being a senior leader in many schools, I wanted a new challenge but had no idea what this was and or the space to think. Much to the shock of family and friends I decided to move to Australia. People thought I was crazy especially as this was in the middle of a pandemic when most of the world was shut down. It was the best decision I have ever made. It's like all the pieces of a jigsaw have come together. Working as a manager in a not-for-profit has aligned all my skills. I love working in an industry that gives back and being integral to implementing a strategic plan that aims to raise the quality of lung health. When I am not at work, I am home being mum to my three gorgeous sons and planning our next adventure exploring this beautiful country. I am passionate about improving the health and well-being of Australians, with particular interests in well-being, fitness, nutrition, food waste, climate change, sustainability, humanity, people, and culture.
