Project Coordinator
At its core, the Office of Transformation is responsible for implementing Lean Healthcare in the South Central Region of IU Health. This department is comprised of improvement leaders and project managers who educate, lead, and support teams by utilizing change management methodology and Lean expertise. As a project coordinator, my role was one of support and skill development.
Planning & Transportation Administrative Assistant
The City of Bloomington offered me a great peek into all of the moving parts of city government: the committees, the diversity of departments as well as job duties you would not find anywhere else, and the importance of serving the public. My day-to-day activities revolved around supporting departmental staff, commissions, and the public. Many of my duties required high levels of attention to detail, organization, and self motivation. This position especially strengthened my customer service skills as well as my in-person, over the phone, and email communications.
Administrative Assistant To The Philosophy Department
In this role, I provided support to office staff as well as to faculty and students of philosophy. My biggest responsibility was processing reimbursements as well as travel documents. My favorite part of working for the Philosophy Department learning how an academic department is managed behind the scenes after I had spent 4 years on the other side as a student; I familiarized myself with tasks like class scheduling, graduate applications, and student management. This position required me to call on the skills I built during my time as an undergraduate, such as time management, professional writing, and effective interpersonal communication.
Office Of Transformation Intern
Internships are for exploring professional possibilities and potential interests and this is exactly what I did with my time at the Office of Transformation. Before IU Health, I had not thought about a potential future in the healthcare industry. Seeing first-hand how lean concepts can be applied to hospital management led me to discover an interest in organizational change, effectiveness, and lean thinking. I gained so much knowledge regarding facilitating change, clinical settings, and teamwork through this internship while at the same time learning about complementary management and human resources concepts through my studies at IU. Working at this internship for a full two semesters during my senior year was intensive and invaluable to my professional development; I would recommend an internship with the Transformation Team to anyone thinking about it solely because the people I met were extremely kind, patient, and supportive of my endeavors.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
For the fall and spring semesters of my senior year at IU, I had the opportunity to assist one of the first classes I'd taken at SPEA: Urban Problems & Solutions. I gained an entirely new perspective on the collegiate classroom experience as I kept track of grades of almost one hundred students, assisted in administering exams, and communicated with students on campus and online. One of my favorite and most valuable parts of this experience was building a relationship with my professor and helping her execute effective lectures and group activities. Being a teaching assistant while enrolled in 18 credit hours and working a weekly 15 hour internship was a great way to test and grow my time management skills.
Human Resources Intern
As my first human resources internship, this position has offered me a lot of hands on experience with training and onboarding of seasonal employees. It has also given me experience in employee documentation and filing. Because I have volunteered and interned with Girls Inc. before, it has been very valuable to continue learning from and working with the same staff and same organization.
Data Management Intern
I originally began as a volunteer for Girls Inc. and wanted to do office tasks to help out during the week. After I displayed I was a quick learner and had an attention for detail, they asked me to be their data management intern for spring semester. Through this position, I was able to better get to know a non-profit office atmosphere, meet and work with a positive and passionate staff, and learn more about Girls Inc. and what they do for the community.
Education Coordinator For The Rooftop Garden
I was asked to take on the role of coordinator after being an education intern during the summer. Although this position still involved lesson planning and interacting with the kids, it was an introduction to managing people for me. During my time as coordinator, I fine-tuned my communication skills like one-on-one, group, and email interactions. I also recruited and interviewed potential interns in order to create the best team to deliver effective lessons.
Intern For The Education Program At The Rooftop Garden
Middle Way House's Rooftop Garden program focuses on connecting children effected by domestic violence to gardening and the natural world around them. As an education intern, I did this by writing, teaching, and participating in lessons based around science and math concepts. That particular summer, we had a grant regarding butterflies so I was able to teach a lesson about monarch migration and another on pollution and its effects on things as big as weather patterns and as small as bugs.
Support Staff
As a support staff, I facilitated social, emotional, and intellectual development in children 1 to 5 years of age. I formed relationships with parents and lead teachers to understand each child more effectively. Resolving children’s interpersonal and intrapersonal issues was an important part of my job to maintain a positive learning space.
