As the dean of one of the country’s most prestigious health professions schools, I’m helping to shape the future of healthcare by first listening to community and business leaders. This approach challenges traditional university practices, which have a reputation for telling the community what it needs, instead of listening to its needs. At The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Health Professions (UAB SHP), we engage with the community by:#1: LISTENING to your needs, to your business’s needs and to your community’s needs. By doing so, we’re identifying real-world problems—together. #2: FOCUSING our resources and expertise on problems we’re uniquely suited to address. #3: TAILORING innovative teaching and research solutions to address real-world problems.#4: PARTNERING with strategic communities, businesses and global leaders to expand the impact of our resources and training.WHO I AM:• Dean and leader of UAB SHP, a nationally ranked school training everyone in the medical field except doctors and nurses• Graduate of Harvard University’s Management and Leadership in Education and Management Development programs• Professor/facilitator at the UAB Center for Healthcare Management and Leadership’s Executive Program • Nationally sought-after healthcare and leadership presenter • Co-chair of the UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative Governing Board• Editorial board member for the Journal of Allied Health, the publication of the Association of Schools of Allied Health ProfessionalsWHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED:• Led 4 UAB SHP programs to be ranked by U.S. News & World Report • Expanded UAB SHP facilities by building new floors outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, laboratories and learning spaces• Acquired research funding approaching $14 million• Served as principal investigator for over $1 million in awarded grants• Co-founded UAB’s leadership development program (BLAZE)• Authored and published research articles in 35 publications

Dean, College Of Allied Health SciencesEast Carolina University Sep 1992 - Apr 2001Greenville, North Carolina AreaFor nearly a decade, I served as the Dean of NC's first and only College of Allied Health Sciences, the largest university provider of allied health professionals for the state. The School at ECU was roughly half the size of UAB SHP in terms to enrollment, faculty and facilities and operated with a more centralized financial model. I was tasked with increasing the School’s visibility to the University and within local, regional and state communities. The School was an under appreciated resource largely because of the strong internal and operational foci of previous deans, but within nine years, my leadership team reversed the visibility issues and accomplished a number of important tasks.Select accomplishments at ECU include:• Growth of the School’s enrollment and funding by 70%• Expanded the School’s academic program offerings from nine to fourteen • Established the first “allied health” doctoral program in the State of North Carolina • Established the first distance-delivery health degree programs in the State with degrees in Speech Pathology and Physician Assistant Studies• Successfully worked in conjunction with the School of Nursing to obtain bond funding for a new shared $48 million facility -
Chief & Founding Director Of The Science Policy And Analysis BranchThe National Institute On Drug Abuse (Nida) 1990 - 1992Washington D.C. Metro AreaAs a founding branch chief for this NIDA branch, my duties included assembling and managing a team responsible for the following tasks: • Institute’s scientific strategic planning process • Managing cross-divisional Institute activities including all educational efforts (K-12 through postdoctoral fellowships and diversity efforts) • Health policy analysis for legislative and executive branch needsMuch of these efforts focused on translating the scientific needs of investigators to legislators, and then translating the priorities of legislators back to the scientific community. This required regular contact and interaction with a variety of federal agencies and with congressional members and staffers. I also served as a media spokesperson for NIDA on controversial scientific issues. -
