Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia are some of the leading causes of death in countries with an aging population. In addition to the emotion burden placed those living with these disease, along with their families, there is also huge economic costs associated with caring for these patients, making this one of the biggest health challenges facing Australia in the 21st century. Although many molecular processes are known to be disrupted in these diseases, only recently has it been shown that protein synthesis is perturbed in frontotemporal dementia. Protein synthesis is a vital process in neurons, with it being required for the formation of long term memory. My work focusing on developing methods for examining protein synthesis and using these, in combination with proteomics and bioinformatics, to identify mechanisms by which protein synthesis is perturbed in neurodegenerative diseases. By doing so, we hope to gain a greater understand of how these diseases effect processes such a long-term memory formation and also identify potential therapeutic targets.
