Business Support Officer
Whilst working for the council in the school admissions department I was responsible for liaising with and maintaining relations with over 30 Schools in and around the Birmingham area. The main focus of the role was dealing with in year applications for school places and filtering through applications of would-be students. Day to day tasks involved liaising with numerous schools and supporting them in any issues they had regarding their students and places available at their school. At times, more often than not, I had to communicate effectively with other councils around the country in regard to families and students relocating to Birmingham and in turn communicate with their desired school to make sure the transition from one establishment to the next was smooth and uninterrupted. My next challenge with the council was one I excelled in. As a Business Support Officer in the Children and Families Directorate, my role is to process and update multiple spreadsheets and Case workers on the funding requests sent in by schools for specific children. During my time as a business support officer, I have had to run multiple meetings over MS teams to determine whether funding will be granted or not and to assess children’s needs based on the information collated from the school.
Human Resources Officer
During the 3 months I worked at Birmingham City University I was based in the Human Resources team supporting and dealing with incoming applications for senior positions such as Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers. I was tasked with communicating with the applicants on a daily basis to make sure the transition from their previous employment to their new role went smoothly and on schedule. It was also during this time that I created the contracts of employment and made sure the clauses required were correct and the dates/Salaries were all in order. Part of the process was to make sure that each successful applicant was inputted onto the system correctly via the Universities in house programme called ERP. Not only did I have to stay in contact with the successful applicants but also the unsuccessful ones as well and although this was never a nice part of the job, I always did my best to find alternative employment for them be it through the university or directing them to alternative means of employment based on their skill set. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working for the University and I believe it has only enhanced my recruitment skills previously picked up through my time at Hays.
Recruitment Consultant
I initially started off recruiting for teaching assistants for Primary schools in North Birmingham, liaising with 170 schools fulfilling their requirements for staff when necessary. When a role came up on the Secondary school team I jumped at the chance as this was a new challenge and new clients/candidates to speak to. It is during my time on the secondary desk where I have attended numerous open days at Birmingham City University providing advice and counsel to newly qualified teachers who were unsure of their next steps. I found these experiences of open days and universities invaluable and always volunteer whenever the opportunity presents itself to offer advice to students and teachers unsure of the path they wish to go down. The lessons and skills I have learnt at hays are not only transferrable to everyday life, but also to a new working environment. During the fast-paced day, an integral part of the job was sourcing and contacting candidates through your own initiative and using techniques such as Boolean rules to your advantage, something which I have great knowledge in doing. I also found that by using LinkedIn I was able expedite a process that would usually be a long and drawn out one by utilising the facilities on the website to find the best and most appropriate candidates. During my time at Hays, I also had to interview a wide range of applicants and students in order for them to register with the company. It was due to this process that I have developed my interviewing skills and have found the right questions to ask in order to extract the best information from candidates.
Real Estate Rental Agent
During my time at Paul Carr, I was a part of the busiest department within the lettings side of the business. My day-to-day tasks included updating some of our biggest clients in regards to the referencing of potential tenants as well as the renewal of existing tenancies. Also preparing the contracts as well as other important legal documents for both landlords and tenants to sign.
Real Estate Rental Agent
I was working in the lettings department and at times had been managing that department on my own. My roles included seeing people through the whole process of lettings from the moment they walked through the door or picked up the phone. From booking the viewings, taking the application fee’s, referencing the client, and then arranging the move in dates whilst liaising with the landlord as well as the tenant. This process also included me preparing the sign-up pack and the relevant documents such as the tenancy agreement, inventory as well as the necessary gas/electric certificates. As well as this, my day-to-day tasks included updating every landlord with any interest on their property to keep them updated on the progress as well as build up a rapport with the client. If the interest on a certain property hadn’t been as much as we would like I would then advise a sensible reduction to generate more interest. Another one of my roles was to put properties onto the market be it a re-let or a new instruction and then to update the display cards in the windows accordingly. Once a property had gone on the market I would then go through the mailing list and try to generate interest from people I had registered looking for a specific property.Other tasks which I managed successfully included arranging Valuations on properties, winning new landlords on a fully managed as well as let-only basis which I did many times.
Supervisor
My duties included, cashing up the tills, maintaining a professional appearance of the shop, serving customers, and attending any queries they may have, leading other staff members whilst on shift, utilising my shift to meet required sales targets.
