Command Aviation Warfare Officer. Responsible to the Delivery Duty Holder (DDH) as the chief tactical advisor including current operations in Afghanistan. In depth knowledge of current defensive aids suites, weapon & laser systems, tactical helicopter training and exercises, integration of emerging technical solutions including training, briefing, trials and documentation.This saw the introduction and modifications to IR Jammer, IR flare, RF chaff & other specific role equipment.As a critical player in the return to contingency operations directly involved with returning to operations in the littoral & maritime at the tactical level. Embarked for phases of Exercise Joint Warrior as an aviation SME, Duty Staff Officer and key planner.Also integrated key Urgent Operational Requirements into the Commando Helicopter Force (Discrete communications & location systems, upgrades to Radar Altimeter, DAS system upgrades).Conducted Trial and Evaluation on the Sea King Mk4 (communications and DAS systems) and on in-Service Survival Equipment (arctic flying gloves and Osprey Body Armour).Submitted for and recieved additional RN funding from in-year underspends to enhance Force Capability with additional IT, Simunition and troop shelter protection.

Military Pilot; graduated from AAC Flying Course 320 at Middle Wallop in Dec 1989 and appointed to 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron as a Gazelle pilot.Completed aviation flying tours in Northern Ireland, Belize, Norway, Sierra Leone, British Guiana and the Oman.Tactical Flying Instructor; completed both the Qualified Helicopter Tactics Instructor (RAF Benson), the Weapons & Tactics Instructor (Marine Air Warfare Training School, Yuma, USA) and Air Combat Training Instructor prior to converting to the Lynx AH7 and further Operational flying tours to Iraq, Sierra Leone, with exercises in Oman and the Czech Republic. Provided Command advice and warfare training to ab initio pilots.Operational Command; converted to the Sea King Mk4 (medium support helicopter) with further operational/exercise experience in Iraq / Bosnia. Further qualifications as a Night Vision Goggle Instructor (NVGI) and attended the inaugural RN Aviation Warfare Officer (AvWO) Course at HMS Collingwood, culminating in a tour in the Sea King training squadron as the senior tactical instructor to ab initio and refreshing pilots.Finally re-appointed to a front-line squadron as the Primary Tactical Adviser and deployed to Afghanistan as the commander of a 60-man detachment.
