Student Reviewer
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) is an independent organisation responsible for maintaining and enhancing the provision of higher education in the United Kingdom This is done through a system of peer-review, with reviews being conducted to ensure degree-awarding institutions meet the expectations of the higher education sector. Reviewers assess an institution against the UK Quality Code for Higher Education with a review team comprising of academics from other institutions, a student reviewer and a review manager who co-ordinates the review. My role as a QAA Student Reviewer involves significant desk-based research prior to a review. This research is primarily based around reading a Self-Evaluation Document provided by the institution as well as a Student Submission supplied by the Students' Union, which help give insight into the institution and develop lines of enquiry. There are then preparatory meetings, before finally visiting an institution (for up to a week) in order to meet with staff, students, and other key stakeholders. At the end of the review, a report is published outlining the extent to which the institution has met the Quality Code. Practically speaking, I am involved in chairing several meetings whilst at the institution, as well as writing up sections of the report based upon my lines of enquiry. Furthermore, given I am a Student Reviewer, I have the added responsibility of ensuring the student voice is heard throughout the review of an institution too.
President And Chair Of The Board Of Trustees
Between 2014-2016 I served as President of the Liverpool Guild of Students, Liverpool University's Students' Union body. As President, I was the first point of call for students, the University, and other bodies (like the National Union of Students and City Council), and it was my job to ensure that students are effectively represented. Whilst President, we won a number of national awards, including being recognised as the NUS HE Students' Union of the Year for 2016.Responsibilities:- Chair of the Guild's Board of Trustees - Member of University Council with budget responsibility of £450m- Member of the Vice Chancellor's Strategic Review Project Board- Member of the Liverpool University delegation to Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in China in 2014 and 2015- Member of the Pro-Vice Chancellor's Education Advisory GroupKey achievements:- Increased the Guild's block grant funding from the University by 25%- Increased the Guild's satisfaction rating from 48% to 70% over two years (as measured by the National Student Survey, NSS)- Winner of the National Union of Students' 'Student Opportunity Award 2015' and 'Higher Education Student Union of the Year 2016' - Led the Guild's response to various consultations (specifically the Higher Education White Paper 'Success as a Knowledge Economy’, and also the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Technical Consultation)
