About Harry Jacobson

Harry Jacobson MD is a decorated healthcare executive, entrepreneur, and community leader. He is a partner at Health Care Innovative Partners, a founder of many healthcare-oriented companies, and the former Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and CEO of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Jacobson has one of the most influential voices in American healthcare and has worked to revolutionize healthcare in his fifty-year career. He has received several lifetime achievement awards and is a member of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame. Dr. Jacobson serves on the board of many healthcare-related companies, and he has served on the board of three publicly-traded companies, including Merck, Renal Care Group, and Kinetic Concepts. He is also a seasoned investor and has founded and invested in more than 20 healthcare companies. Dr. Jacobson completed his Bachelor of Science and Medical School at the University of Illinois. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital before completing his Nephrology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern. After 2 years on active military duty as a Major in the Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, he joined the faculty at UT Southwestern. He spent 31 years in Medical academia, first at the University of Texas, then at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He was the Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs and CEO of VUMC from 1997-2009. During his tenure as CEO, the medical center’s revenue grew from $750 million to more than $2.5 billion. Dr. Jacobson’s favorite achievement during his time at Vanderbilt was the construction of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital and of Vanderbilt Health at 100 Oaks. Dr. Jacobson also co-founded Renal Care Group (NYSE: RCG) while at Vanderbilt, which was acquired by Fresenius in 2006 for $3.5 billion. In 2009, Dr. Jacobson retired from academia and embraced a more financial approach to healthcare by becoming the Chairman of Medcare Investment Funds. While at Medcare, he invested more than $600 million into a portfolio of 14 companies. He also launched an early-stage venture fund called TriStar Technology Ventures. Dr. Jacobson still serves on the board of several companies invested in through TriStar and Medcare, and he also serves as a formal and informal advisor to several venture funds. He is the author of two books: the Principles and Practice of Nephrology and Begin Again Now: The Path to Fixing Health Care, and he has published more than 100 scientific papers.
