Designing devices, experiments and interaction scenarios for eliciting measuring and analysing laughter. ILHAIRE is an EU FP7 project, with nine partners in six EU countries, that aims to incorporate laughter into human-computer interactions in order to increase their efficacy and enhance user experience. Applications include emotionally competent avatars as game companions, teachers, and coaches for physical therapy. As part of a world class Human-Computer Interaction group (www.ucl.ac.uk/uclcic) I also supervised succesful MSc projects for two experienced students on the UCLIC HCI-E (Human-Computer Interaction with Ergonomics) course.

I was responsible for the experimental psychology component of a cross-disciplinary project investigating the perception of moving faces. I disseminated our research through peer-reviewed publications, at international conferences and to the public at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition. This multidisciplinary project combined the pyschological expertise of the UCL Vision Research Laboratory with computer scientists at Queen Mary University of London.

I assessed mobility, quality of life and social isolation in people with Parkinson’s Disease through surveys and one-to-one testing. I assessed a novel virtual reality device for improving their walking ability, recruiting patients from clinics at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and visiting local patient groups.
