Developed courses to educate 700 laboratory workers, eliminating damage caused by lack of knowledge (estimated saving $1,200,000). Can present RF technique in simple form for non-engineers, & courses of up to 70. Engineer (Ksa) - Urban Communications (Pmr / Lmr)
In detail:Install and commission nationwide comms system in Saudi Arabia, then maintenance of the system in Jeddah, and Riyadh.Management of up to 15 locally employed workshop staff, creating maintenance instructions, radio system fault finding beyond the scope of normal workshop staff. Design & implementation of special customer needs, for example:1. Communications “connect” panels. A system for inter-connecting 14 VHF voice repeaters, used by National Guard, in two regions (Jeddah & Mecca), allowing controllers in one region to control the system in another region. Involved design & production of analogue plug-in “splitter panels” to divide control in two directions.Divided audio + E&M, and routed control traffic over microwave telephone MUX to other region. Plug-in approach eliminated the need for permanent modifications.2. AC 230 V no-break supply. Unstable local AC power caused computer crashes. DC-AC converters designed to provide modems with AC power, derived from an existing 24 V DC no-break supply.3. Interface units (RF cavity/tuned circuit) to isolate DC, when 12 V radio equipment is installed in 24 V vehicle (the “royal bus”). Unit used tightly coupled 450MHz resonant tuned circuits, with no DC continuity.4. Emergency repeater. Microwave (MUX) for telephone traffic disabled by a building site crane obstruction. I used two local cross-coupled TX/RX to relay the VHF network to the UHF mobiles used by North Jeddah palace guards.5. Designed solar regulator to charge & cycle backup batteries. The power used for security forces radio coverage at Riyadh camel races, and Jeddah to Medina road during the annual holy pilgrimage.6. Design simple test equipment, such as an accurate AF alignment tool for LF signalling tones (71.2Hz CTCSS). Local test gear limited to +/- 1Hz. My instrument was +/- 0.01Hz.Functioned as a system trouble-shooter for other regions.

(2 year break, in UK, from C&W above)I was initially employed for site installation and commissioning of Tait Mobile Radio (UK) radio communications equipment, for example, repeaters, community repeaters, “Trunked Radio” (earlier version of TETRA and RAKEL) to MPT1327 and MPT1341.I assumed the roll of radio/electronic designer due to shortage of staff (the expert was offered another job). Examples of projects I designed include:1. Portable repeaters. These comprised two pairs of transmitters and receivers (transceivers) to extend the range of the police radio communications system for temporary or emergency local communications. The system was used by 90% of the UK police force.2. Logic control system to select and establish radio communications between Norwegian tankers and oil platforms, for computer monitoring of oil delivery.3. On-board analogue intercom system. Used by Huntingdon (UK) fire services so fire-fighting teams can communicate during high ambient noise conditions.4. Modification of VHF FM mobile transceivers to provide RS232 data output. Used by UK ambulance service to give written confirmation of instructions to paramedic teams.5. Design of simple digital RF synthesizer. Unit used to demonstrate synthesizer principle during full time education of dealer’s technicians and engineers in Tait products.

This is where I sat on a RF test bench and trimmed/aligned/tested 2-way (analogue) radio communications equipment as they came off the production line.I always filled my quota in about 1/2 the allocated time then had the other bench engineers feed me their difficult faulty sets.
