I am an Assistant Professor at UNAM - Institute of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at Bilkent University and the founder and principal investigator of the Emergent Complex Optical Systems Laboratory (https://hyilmaz.unam.bilkent.edu.tr). My research explores the physics and applications of complex photonic systems at the intersection of optics, statistical physics, and condensed matter physics.Previously, I held roles as a postdoctoral associate and later as an associate research scientist in Prof. Hui Cao's lab in the Department of Applied Physics at Yale University. I earned my Ph.D. from the University of Twente in the Netherlands in 2015, where I worked with Prof. Allard Mosk on my thesis titled “Advanced Optical Imaging with Scattering Lenses.” In 2011, I completed my M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering at Koç University, where I conducted research with Prof. Ali Serpengüzel in the Microphotonics Research Laboratory. I obtained my B.Sc. in Physics Engineering from İstanbul Technical University in 2008.
