A leader in the cultural and university sectors known for leading change during uncertain times and brokering strategic partnerships across sectors. In March 2021 Hazel joined Arts Council England as the South East Area Director. She is committed to universal access to culture and arts education with a career spanning the university and cultural sectors in three regions – the North East, the South West and most recently, the South East. Before joining the Arts Council, she led research in arts, humanities and education at Durham University and the University of the West of England in Bristol, where she was Associate Dean for Research & Innovation.She trained as a history curator and gained extensive experience in museums and art galleries in the North East. She was the first woman to lead Discovery Museum, the large science and industry museum in Newcastle upon Tyne which attracts over 400,000 visitors a year. In 2015 she became a Fellow of the Museums Association in recognition of her considerable contribution to the sector.An adaptive, values-led leader and acknowledged ‘boundary spanner’- in 2017 Western Sydney University in Australia appointed her to the role of Adjunct Fellow to deliver a development programme on research partnerships. Hazel is experienced at working at scale across a university faculty and now the South East region as part of the Arts Council England’s national leadership team.She is an experienced chair and board director at national and regional level. Positions include the current Chair of the London and South East Area Towns Group, former Director and Deputy Chair of Bristol Ideas and member of the Museums Association Board
