Developed interactive data visualizations of spatiotemporal global health data using JavaScript (D3, jQuery, WebGL).Designed, and lead a team of three developers to deliver IHME’s Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Data Tool:http://www.healthdata.org/gbd-data-toolhttp://ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-data-toolUIs were developed using React, jQuery, D3, Webpack, Babel. Backend architecture consists of several components running in containers (Docker, Rancher), communicating over ports. Requests to the GBD Data API (Flask) are handled synchronously, or asynchronously depending on the expected size of the response. Asynchronous tasks are queued (Celery, RabbitMQ), consumed by workers. Results are downloaded by users via emailed URLs.Responding to demand for similar anachronous APIs, developed a data download framework, utilized by IHME’s Data Sources Tool.Built internal map tile servers (Docker, Rancher, CartoDB) for visualizing high resolution geospatial data.

Developed mobile-cloud technology for high-density clinical data collection and analysis, significantly reducing the cost of future clinical trials and improving patient monitoring and care.Built patient-facing mobile applications and games, utilizing phone sensors and external devices (Android, SQL Lite, Amazon S3). Target diseases included Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis andHuntington’s Disease.Evaluated third party technology and built proof-of-concept systems to improve effectiveness of patient care during physician office visits. Applications included eye tracking, spirometry, and gait analysis (using pressure sensitive floor tiles and Microsoft Kinect). Received the Vocap Platinum Award for outstanding contribution. Built a mobile application for displaying real-time hazard information about experiments running in chemistry labs (Android), improving lab safety andreplacing paper forms with a tablet installed outside each lab.Lead developer of Vertex Electronic Notebook (VBook), a tool central to the workflow for hundreds of chemists worldwide (Java SE, Hibernate, MySQL). VBook replaces paper-based experiment reports with searchable electronic documents. Enhanced VBook user experience by improving throughput, liveness, visualization capacity, error handling, and overall performance (java.util.concurrent).Collaborated with chemists to design and implement new features for interfacing with lab instruments, chemical databases, and automating many routine tasks, thereby improving lab productivity and streamlining the FDA submission process. Collaborated with team members from molecular modeling to design and implement a pharmacaphore modeling tool (Java SE, MySQL). Modeling improvements reduce cost by narrowing down compounds to be explored in pre-clinical studies.

Developed a web-based platform for visualizing large geocoded datasets (Google Web Toolkit). Built upon the Google Maps API and using GEOServer, MapMundi overcame many limitations of native Google Maps markers, and allowed greater access to data and trend visualization.Worked with Tuck Business School (Dartmouth College), Fuqua School of Business (Duke University) and Harvard Business School on projects mapping public datasets:MapEcos gave users an intuitive UI to access to EPA Emissions data near their home, and evaluate other areas. Gentilly Project allowed Hurricane Katrina-affected New Orleans residents to monitor recovery progress in their neighborhood.
