Profile bio

About Heather Atkinson

After several years of classroom teaching, I decided to follow my passion and work exclusively with students requiring additional support. I am a qualified Nurture Practitioner, Thrive Practitioner, Drawing and Talking Practitioner, and Mental Health First Aider."Nurture groups are an in-school, teacher-led psychosocial intervention of groups of less than 12 students that effectively replace missing or distorted early nurturing experiences for both children and young adults; they achieve this by immersing students in an accepting and warm environment which helps develop positive relationships with both teachers and peers" - Nurture Group NetworkMost of my experience lies within Years 3-4 (Lower juniors, ages 7-9), but I have also spent time teaching Year 6 (ages 10 -11), Year 5 (ages 9-10) and Key Stage 1 (5-7). For two terms, I was a Special Education Needs teacher in Year 2.I also have to deal with the personal care of children who suffer health problems such as allergies and diabetes. I must be aware of the warning signs leading to a possible attack and how to use an EpiPen in a severe incident. I am in constant contact with children diagnosed with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language and autism and have had to learn new insights into such disabilities and how to adapt my teaching style to accommodate any extra help they may require. Although I hold no formal qualifications, I have basic training and experience in support for speech and language and various motor skills programs, such as 'Jump Ahead' and 'Clever Hands'.In my previous schools, I was a Subject Leader for RE, and I was responsible for leading assemblies on a given theme/topic. My assemblies have been viewed by visitors, Governors and OFSTED and rated excellent and outstanding. Furthermore, I have run various after-school clubs, such as Chess Club, Spanish Club and Glee Club (Choir).

Listed skills include Teaching, Learning Disabilities, Thrive Approach, Nurture Groups, and 33 others.
