Heather Coleman Work Experience Details
  • Noaa: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
Deep Sea Coral Research And Technology Program Coordinator
Noaa: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Jun 2016 - Present
    Washington D.C. Metro Area
NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program supports science that informs protection and management of deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems. We work with NOAA and academic researchers around the country, and synthesize results for the regional Fishery Management Councils.
  • National Academy Of Sciences
    Postdoctoral Fellow
National Academy Of Sciences Jan 2015 - Jun 2016
    Washington D.C. Metro Area
The National Academies provides scientific and policy leadership primarily through consensus studies, which reflect expert committee deliberation to provide nationally significant guidance on a variety of topics requested by sponsors. At NAS, I primarily worked on studies to recommend effective approaches for monitoring restoration activities in the Gulf of Mexico, to prioritize research directions in Atmospheric Chemistry, and to evaluate the Landscape Conservation Cooperatives Network.
  • Pacmara (Pacific Marine Analysis And Research Association)
    Senior Science & Policy Advisor
Pacmara (Pacific Marine Analysis And Research Association) Feb 2010 - Dec 2015
PacMARA is a charitable organization of science and planning professionals dedicated to building and increasing capacity in marine and coastal planning in Canada and internationally. Our goal is to help promote sustainable prosperity through communication, coordination, and collaboration – ultimately linking science with decision making. PacMARA provides facilitation, training, analysis, and support for the ocean planning community through a variety of methods such as conducting workshops, courses, symposia, and spatial planning research internationally (40+ courses/workshops in 14 countries to date). Participants include cross-sector government agencies, NGOs, researchers, industries, and community groups. As the Senior Science & Policy Advisor, I identified, designed, and directed innovative programs and projects to inform decision-making primarily around marine spatial planning (MSP). I engaged policy-makers and stakeholders in learning and sharing best practices for multi-objective MSP, translate science concepts and results to a broad audience, facilitate workshops and diverse working groups to solve marine conservation and resource use conflicts, support government agencies, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, academia, industry groups, and stakeholders in inclusive decision-making processes, and help build and maintain an international MSP community of practice. In my years with PacMARA, I have built capacity and expanded resources available to conservation planners and managers by strategically developing and leading PacMARA’s internationally-recognized training program from its inception. I am recognized as an expert in current and evolving trends in ocean conservation planning.
  • Uc Santa Barbara
    Graduate Student Researcher
Uc Santa Barbara Aug 2004 - Dec 2009
Bren School Of Environmental Science And Management
My research at UCSB focused on effects of natural offshore oil seeps on marine populations and communities, especially in terms of inter-generational defense against pollution. Other projects included a research cruise off the Channel Islands to collect biological samples from deepwater oil and gas seeps (using the famous Alvin submarine!), a trip to the North Pacific Gyre to examine the extent and ecological effects of marine debris, and a review of the history, politics, social dynamics, and ecological effects, as well as a cost/benefit analysis of restoring the Golden Horn estuary in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Los Angeles Waterkeeper
    Assoc. Director Of Kelp Restoration
Los Angeles Waterkeeper Sep 2003 - Jun 2004
With LA Waterkeeper (formerly Santa Monica Baykeeper), I organized, trained, and led approximately 100 SCUBA volunteers in giant kelp restoration, conservation, monitoring, and public presentations. I also taught marine ecology and led hands-on kelp-growing experiments in elementary and middle school classrooms.
  • Ucla
    Research Technician
    Ucla Jan 2003 - Jun 2004
At UCLA, I studied oceanic biogeochemical cycling in the Santa Monica Bay and native plant conservation and management in the Santa Monica Mountains. I also served as a grammatical editor of climate science journal articles.
  • Heal The Bay
Key To The Sea Naturalist And Coastal Cleanup Coordinator
Heal The Bay Jan 2001 - Dec 2003
With Key to the Sea, I led K-5th grade classes in an outdoor marine/coastal education program on coastal research and pollution prevention to discover kids' inner scientists. As Coastal Cleanup Coordinator, I organized cleanups for 50+ beaches across Los Angeles County and educated school and community groups on marine pollution.
  • Unc Chapel Hill
    Research Technician
Unc Chapel Hill Jun 2002 - Aug 2002
As a lab and diving tech, I studied coral and sea fan response to nutrient addition as a proxy for anthropogenic pollution at the Centro Ecologico Akumal, on the east coast of Mexico. I was chosen to present this work to the US Congress by the Council on Undergraduate Research.
