I come to you with nine years of experience in special education, specifically in the self-contained adaptive behavior setting. During my time I have served in two capacities: first as the self-contained teacher for our behavior unit, and currently as a special education instructional coach/facilitator for the same units. Students in our classrooms come to us with multiple disabilities and needs such as: trauma, drug use, homelessness, high crime rates, and special education eligibilities such as: emotional disturbance, autism, and intellectual disabilities.During my time with my current district, I have served in the development, creation, and implementation of the program and curriculum currently being used in our Social Development classrooms. With this experience, I am now able to provide professional development to our teachers regarding the safety and success of our students in the program. I have also served our district in curriculum design for the implementation of our new social-emotional learning curriculum. This curriculum allows teachers to provide social-emotional lessons to their students while in the general education classroom setting. I am also a certified Non-violent Crisis Intervention trainer, and use many of these skills taught in that program to provide professional development to teachers who work with students in crisis and de-escalation techniques. While in my current role, I assist teachers in finding of resources for in the classroom, resources for the parents, the creation and implementation of Individual Education Plans and Behavior Intervention Plans, behavior interventions, social skills training and lesson planning, provide district wide training, and more. This role has also provided me with experiences in connecting schools to the community and having open communication with professionals such as probation officers, physicians, therapists, mental health providers, advocates, group homes and foster placements.
