As an environmental education intern I taught hands-on environmental education programs to elementary-aged children. These programs focused on Florida fresh water education, as well as general education about water conservation, recycling, and watersheds. I represented WaterVentures at public and community events, explaining our exhibits and answering any questions guests may have had, and assisted in setting up and breaking down company exhibits.

Gainesville, Florida Area

As a land management intern, I identified and eradicated invasive plant species using both a backpack sprayer and the 'hack and squirt' method. I prepared herbicide mixtures and kept all spray equipment clean and maintained. I maintained small engine equipment such as chainsaws and weed eaters. I maintained trails using mowers and weed eaters and maintained trail markings. I worked on restoring native habitats by removing invasive or out of place species, and then prepared the habitat to be planted with habitat appropriate species.

White Springs, Fl

As an environmental intern, I assisted in collecting water samples from various points on the Potash property, and assisted in analyzing these samples in the environmental lab. I conducted field tests for temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen levels, and turbidity at set test points around the property. I also conducted field tests for chlorine levels in both potable and waste water. I calibrated sampling instruments daily and kept meticulous data logs. I learned how to properly collect samples in order to avoid contamination, learned proper chain of custody procedures for samples in the lab, and became familiar with Florida DEP Standard Operating Procedures.
