Sindelfingen, Germany

Last session of Co-Op in the Joining Technology department at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen Germany. Focus of the semester was on Semi-Hollowed Self Piercing Riveting in regards to joining materials of different properties, such as Steel and Aluminum, as well as testing and researching prototype rivets for various applications from all Aluminum sheets to those where one sheet exhibited high tensile strength, such as USIBOR Steel. Various testing methods/machines used:-Boellhoff SPR (Self-Piercing Riveting) joining machine using various dies, sheets of material, and rivets-Tensile machine to test the head strength of the rivet as well as the normal tensile test-Grinders, Clamps, and Polishers to prepare certain samples and create a nominal level lattice plane with no scratches-Light microscope to measure the cross sections of the rivets and to scale and measure the tolerances of the head, length, and undercutThe daily work and such revolved around the German language where speaking, listening, and discussing in German were every day challenges. The end of the semester concluded with two final presentations. The first was over video to the Vice President of Engineering at MBUSI (Mercedes-Benz U.S. International) in English as well as manager and supervisors at the plant in Sindelfingen in German.The second end of semester presentation, along with a written document, was given to the Joining Technology department in Sindelfingen, consisting of my mentor, supervisor, and coworkers, in the German language.

Second of the three semester sessions with Mercedes-Benz in Vance, AL in the Supplier Quality Engineering department for the Body section of production.Common tasks included:-Created daily reports on the supplier's rating for supervisor-Created monthly reports and distributing as well as discussing it with coworkers on the supplier's performance for the month-Worked with other departments within Quality to achieve information and tasks as assigned by the coworkers-Created reports and calculated measurements for the Body teardowns for the C292 and C205 car lines to determine the ability and functionality of the paint on the body of the cars. Common failures were single-sided bonding as well as webbing-Helped prepare and deliver parts timely for time-trials through the Paint department-Worked with the MBUSI and supplier engineer to determine, correct, and implement solutions to a part problem that was causing downtime on line
