Teaching at a College of Further Education (vocational focus) left me with an interest in skills development for young adults who for all sorts of reasons did not enjoy or benefit from school. That led to curiosity about different approaches to the idea of education and to learning and teaching, which deepened during the years I worked with Per Dalin at IMTEC, a Norwegian non-profit making foundation helping to manage a World Bank-backed teacher education reform project in Indonesia. Although he probably doesn’t know it, Michael Fullan of OISE drew me into evaluation and eventually research and various consultancies in Indonesia (again), Jordan and Eastern Europe. I’ve learned so much from so many, from undervalued young adults in a deprived northern area to the many inspiring teaching and research colleagues I’ve been fortunate to have in Europe, North America and south-east Asia. I feel honoured by my current connection with Bunker Roy and The Barefoot College in Tilonia - it’s an adventure enabling me to put all this experience to use. It doesn’t leave much spare time these days but when I have some, I write fiction for my own pleasure, perhaps with early music in the background, and try not to get so carried away that dinner burns. I’d love to know if I’m the only person who’s melted a saucepan and scraped exploded boiled egg off the ceiling.
