I study popular culture using tools from the humanities and the social sciences. My current book project examines the exchange of romantic narratives between the US and Turkey. The project includes a survey of 371 Turkish Harlequin romance readers; interviews with romance writers, editors, and translators; back-translation of Turkish-language Harlequins; and literary analysis of romantic texts—novels, soap operas, paintings, and graphic novels—in English and Turkish. I co-chair the Romance Area at the Popular Culture Association. In addition to undergraduate seminars on academic writing, popular culture, and public policy, I’ve run pedagogy workshops for faculty and graduate students. Most out-of-character moment: I spent four years co-teaching with a nuclear physicist.
