I teach event management, social media, and strategic communications courses as well as coordinate the Event Management Certificate, one of the largest certificates on campus.
As part of a collaborative team, I wrote features, news stories, and other content for the University of Iowa College of Education. My work appeared in our alumni magazine, annual report, online via now.uiowa.edu, and elsewhere. In addition to my writing work, I was director of alumni relations. In this role, I conceptualized and carried out events to help our alumni maintain and strengthen their connections with the University of Iowa and College of Education.
As a UI J-School graduate, I relished the chance to stay involved and get to know the school's innovative, bright students as an adjunct instructor. Over the years, I taught courses in basic reporting and writing, education beat reporting and writing, profile writing, event planning, and digital and social media.
At Kirkwood, I enjoyed working with diverse students--from teenagers still deciding if college was right for them, to young veterans, to 40-year-old moms and dads determined to improve their lives by earning a degree. I taught Composition I & II courses both on campus and online. The courses focused on basic college and professional writing skills ranging from creative essays to resumes to in-depth research projects.
While I was only a Press-Citizen reporter for 6 months, I am proud to say I won the Best General Feature award in the 2006 Iowa Associated Press Managing Editors Contest for "Out of the Storm," a project detailing the trials of a family displaced after Hurricane Katrina.
Activities and Societies: Inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, a national journalism honor society.Worked as a Teaching Assistant.
