My areas of professional interest center around marine invertebrate zoology, ecology, and biodiversity. I am interested in applying cutting edge tools to address modern questions about why animals live where they do presently and historically, and how communities will change in the future. When species assemblages change, the ecological services that we depend on also change. I currently study the patterns of diversity in biofouling assemblages in harbours across Canada, how they are shaped by biological (predation, larval supply, competition) and anthropogenic factors (artificial structures, species introductions, fisheries), and how we may better assess the "health" or "impact" of our ocean habitats by incorporating spatial levels of beta-diversity. My professional goals also include biodiversity discovery through both physical exploration as well as DNA Barcoding. My enthusiasm for biodiversity gives me ample motivation as an instructor and artist. I want everybody to share my understanding of the oceans, and I use teaching, outreach, and graphic design as my outlets. My most recent outreach obsession is to engage strangers around the world with marine organisms through iNaturalist.org and SkypeAScientist.com
