I am a scientist with a focus on rare genetic disease, and a science engagement and comms practitioner. I'm currently working as a Research Engagement Manager at the Institute for Regeneration and Repair at the University of Edinburgh, and as a Teaching Fellow on the MSc for Science Communication and Engagement. I'm also writing up my PhD thesis; my research explored the mechanisms of the rare genetic disease EEF1A2 syndrome, investigating the functional consequences of different gene mutations. Outside the lab, I've received assessed MSc-level training in science engagement and communication. I have developed, delivered and evaluated several independent science engagement projects, including a rare disease workshop and a world-first EEF1A2 patient conference, as well as supporting a variety of other events and initiatives for a range of partners.

Biomedical Sciences Msc Placement | Abbott LabThe University Of Edinburgh Mar 2020 - Aug 2020This project focused on a rare neurodevelopmental syndrome caused by mutations in the gene EEF1A2. I tested different computational pathogenicity predictors to see how successfully they could discriminate between benign and harmful genetic mutations, calculated computational protein stability scores, and mapped variants to the structure of the protein. (literature review, ROC evaluation, protein modelling, data analysis) -
Biomedical Sciences Msc Placement | Jarman LabThe University Of Edinburgh Sep 2019 - Feb 2020Drosophila 'ears' are vulnerable to age-related hearing loss - could nicotinamidase, a lifespan extending protein, contribute to sensory cell survival? This project investigated the expression of nicotinamidase in larval and pupal sensory cells, and the effect of knockdown in adult flies.
