I feel that anyone who has worked closely with me would define me as a natural-born educational leader, comfortable making high-stakes decisions in the name of student success; a manager committed to putting the necessary organizational structures in place to create a climate that is inclusive, nurturing and caring for staff and students; a strong, passionate and courageous relational leader who loves mentoring and coaching while holding people around her to the same high moral and professional standards to which she holds herself; a staunch supporter of differentiated and equitable practices to support students identified with exceptionalities; a leader willing to engage in courageous conversations to bring about improved instructional practices resulting in increased student learning; a woman with a wonderful sense of humour, with the exterior of a turtle protecting a heart of gold. The last 20 years as an educator, instructional coach, mentor, manager, Director and Dean of Students have taught me that leadership necessitates a balance between ‘stability’ and ‘change’ and, at the end of the day, is an exercise in influence and trust. Taking the time to foster relationships is probably the best, most rewarding, but hardest part of the job! Being comfortable in the role, I can say that “successful leadership” is not only gauged by my own accomplishments, but rather by the degree to which I am able to foster student success and leadership in staff. As Lead Learner, there is something to be said for the excitement derived from engaging in meaningful Professional Development. I come to school every day with the underlying belief that every teacher is an asset to be nurtured, valued and developed. Therefore, individualized and differentiated PD for staff is no less important than differentiated instructional and assessment strategies for our students!
