Rf / Microwave Design Engineer
Lead RF Design Engineer for wireless base station equipment for both domestic and internationals markets (LTE, WCDMA, CDMA). Design, analyze, and test high power amplifiers, including high efficiency amplifiers using Doherty architectures, digital pre-distortion (DPD), and other linearization schemes. Provide technical leadership for a small cross-functional team of engineers from initial design through full product development. Here are a couple of the accomplishments of which I am proud: • Led the design and development of a 60W high efficiency Doherty power amplifier operating at 2.6 GHz for an LTE remote radio head application using GaN HEMT devices. The GaN design had higher efficiency than conventional LDMOS, and the final design achieved an output stage efficiency of 43-46% at 2.6 GHz.• RF Technical Lead for a 40W power amplifier for an 850-MHz remote radio head product. This was the company’s first Doherty power amplifier designed in-house to be used in commercially available wireless base station equipment.
Rf / Microwave Design Engineer
Designed several power amplifiers for a proof-of-concept effort to demonstrate the feasibility of in-house PA designs versus outsourced designs from external vendors. The success of this effort led the company to continue to do in-house PA design work. Some of my more significant accomplishments included:• Technical Project Leader for the company’s first in-house amplifier design / development team to compete with OEM designs. Since the company had not been doing any in-house PA design work for several years, we often had to be very creative and resourceful to perform the necessary design and test work. • Designed a low cost 10W amplifier for a 2.1-GHz base station router product. This design used RFIC devices for a cost effective output stage.
Oem Vendor Development Engineer
Used systems engineering expertise to write specifications for the power amplifiers required for in-house designed base station products. Worked with external vendors to develop, test, and integrate these power amplifier into base station equipment. Here are a couple of my accomplishments:• Worked with two amplifier vendors to complete a dual-source design of a 32W WCDMA amplifier operating with up to three contiguous carriers in IMT-2000 band. Analyzed the system and wrote a detailed specification for the amplifier. The final designs realized a cost savings of greater than 60%.• Created a stand-alone executable from Matlab code which allowed the external amplifier vendors to generate digital pre-distortion coefficients for their amplifier products. This enabled them to characterize and test their amplifiers without accessing the details of our company-proprietary pre-distortion algorithms.
Sustaining Engineering Design Engineer
Worked as a Sustaining Engineering Design Engineer during most of this period. Managed existing designs of power amplifiers and radios that were already in high volume production. The types of amplifier designs included multi-channel feed-forward and cross-cancellation designs, as well as single channel linear amplifiers. The design efforts ranged from component changes to complete re-designs. Design goals were to improve reliability / manufacturability / testability and reduce cost. Also worked as a Test Engineer for a couple of years. Designed automated test sets and developed the software to automate manufacturing tests for wireless base station products, mostly power amplifiers and radios. Most of my software development work was with Visual Basic, but I also worked with Labview and C/C++.
Principal Research Scientist
Performed contracted research involving analysis, design, and development of electronic systems. My work was focused in the area of electromagnetics. It included projects involving radar, antennas, communications, and microwave and RF circuit design. Here are a few of my more significant accomplishments:• Lead the RF design portion of a project to conduct a detailed failure analysis and re-design of a six-port waveguide switch used in the Air Force’s E3A (AWAC’s) aircraft. Working with a cross-functional team of engineers, I identifed the root cause of the failures and evaluated and tested the effects of various solutions and designs on RF performance. Coordinated the acceptance testing on the first prototypes. • Member of design team for a high power RF wattmeter calibration system for the Air Force. The system used resonant circuits powered by less expensive low power RF sources and amplifiers (less than 200W) to simulate the high power levels (kilowatts) required for full-scale calibration. It was a substantial cost savings for the Air Force.• Principal investigator and project manager for the acquisition of a hand-held all metals locator to be used by Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal. Conducted a logistics survey of commercially available all metals locators and then worked to test and evaluate them by doing environmental testing and human factors analysis.
Graduate Research Associate
While in graduate school, I worked part-time as a Graduate Research Associate at the Ohio State University ElectroScience Laboratory. Some of this work contributed to my Master’s thesis. Analyzed and designed a unique feed horn for a compact range anechoic chamber using computer models and analytical techniques, including moment method and geometrical theory of diffraction. Constructed and tested a prototype to verify computer models.
