About Heidi Kinnunen

Science and new innovations are my motivation to work at the education sector. I am thrilled to learn about new technologies, ideas and practices enhancing our society’s well-being. Research-based knowledge from diverse sciences are needed to generate new technologies and services.Sharing information and promoting science through education and commercial endeavors drives me. At Kvs foundation I lead a small team seeking funding for new and innovative projects. My team both leads and provides services for projects. In addition, I support all our project managers in their work. I constantly build partnerships with other foundations, institutions and governmental bodies. In particular I'm looking for academic partners so that Kvs could become an even closer memeber of the scientific community.Apart from my day job, I run a small company called the Finnwards Oy. It helps professionals who have come to work in Finland to settle down and build their own unique Finnish life. Finnwards provides tutorials and courses to help them adjust to local conditions and lifestyle. Me and my business partner Minna know how it feels like to live in a foreign country, as we have done it several times ourselves. Finland is a true jewel but before you notice it, there are several pitfalls to avoid!

The Impact Team works within the Research Services aiming to boost research ideas into new projects. We help researchers to find partners in industry and build successful research co-operation. In addition we support researchers in commercializing their research.I work every day to change the university researchers' thinking. “Commercialization” is not a dirty word, instead it may be a way to get the researchers' findings work in practice. I encourage academics to bring their results to the society as soon as they are applicable. This may include providing academic consulting services to private enterprises as well as modifying the university rules and guidelines so that private sector co-operation and co-research with the industry would be more tempting.Business Finland is one of our key funders. Co-creation and Co-innovation instruments, together with R2B funding provide good opportunities both for researchers and businesses. Occasionally, the partners need a little boost. That is when we step into the picture to orchestrate the application procedure. If the commercial use is not evident, I encourage researchers to share their findings as soon as there is something to share. Open access journals provide an excellent tool for it. Why wait? Many findings, ideas and results may be communicated in social media e.g. Facebook and LinkedIn, too. Wikipedia provides a great platform to disseminate scientific results for the society. Taking the research results to potential users is a priority to me.My skills and ideas have gained some international attention. I have been invited to give talks in congresses and have been coaching scientists and university leadership from several countries i.e. United Arab Emirates, Poland, Czech Republic and Austria.
  • University Of Helsinki
    Head Of Administration
University Of Helsinki Jan 2007 - Apr 2016
    Helsinki, Finland
Controller (finance), human resources, general management, sponsorshipsFinnish Museum of Natural History (FMNH) is responsible for the preservation, accumulationand exhibition of the national natural history collections in its position. The museum possesses the largest biological collections in Finland. We employed permanently about ~100 people and dozens of fixed term workers.I was responsible for the administration at FMNH. I co-ordinated the implementation of regulations and rules which applied in the management of staff, budget matters and day-to-day administration.Every day was different. I worked closely with the communication specialists to ensure that our staff was kept up-to-date on latest developments: new funding opportunities for researchers, guidelines for service production etc. My team supported the project leaders in financial and HR-related problems. As a member of the management team I was to express my strategical skills. The museum's management team had a meeting every two weeks. Most often we discussed the resources and how to use them in an efficient way. How to lead our researchers to excel? How to get more funding and public visibility? We drew the lines shaping the future of the museum. If anyone thinks that museum is a quiet and stagnated place to work at, he's wrong. FMNH was like a buzzing beehive. New exhibitions were installed continuously, scientific gardens were revamped, collections were digitalized, EU-projects were applied, and behind the scenes international mobility was shaping the working culture. It was a great pleasure to work at FMNH!

  • University Of Helsinki
    Doctoral Student
University Of Helsinki Feb 1995 - Jan 1999
Most of the time I worked for my own PhD. I learned to use MapInfo and enjoyed working with a great research team. In 1997-1998 I consulted the City of Helsinki in a mammal survey. I conducted a survey in the city parks in order to count the number of hedgehogs. My MSc student evaluated their number with Jolly Seber method. We also collected information on hedgehogs movements between parks. Another exciting project took place in 1998 as my friends and I got a small grant to survey the bat species in Helsinki City Centre. Using ultrasound bat detectors was new at the time and we gained a lot of attention from the city dwellers...I also wrote chapters for wildlife books published by Weilin & Göös.
  • Matriculation Examination Board / Ylioppilastutkintolautakunta
    Associate Member
Matriculation Examination Board / Ylioppilastutkintolautakunta Sep 2006 - Dec 2016
    Helsinki Area, Finland
I worked as Finnish Matriculation Examination Board´s associate member for 10 years. The board arranges the Matriculation examination (very similar to German Abitur) in Finland at the end of the Upper Secondary school. The Matriculation examination test's results are widely used to determine the students capability to study i.e. at Finnish universities. I marked 100-200 students' biology examinations every spring and autumn. The biology test sums up the biological knowledge students have learned during the three-year high school. It covers cell biology, evolution and ecology, human biology as well as environmental themes.
  • Helsingin Kaupunki – Helsingfors Stad – City Of Helsinki
    Consultant
Helsingin Kaupunki – Helsingfors Stad – City Of Helsinki Jan 1997 - Dec 1998
    Helsinki Area, Finland
In 1996 the City of Helsinki launched a project in order to survey its fauna. First year, data was gathered on bird diversity. The following year I started as a consultant and focused on the mammals. The bats and hedgehogs were studied in detail. The project was able to arrange mice shrew and rat trapping in several spots. I also organized a collection of data on other mammal sightings in city area (citizen science). One of the objects of the project was to educate citizens about the nature around them. We managed to get a lot of media attention, the people shared their observations eagerly. The third dimension of the project was historical. Mr Eero Haapanen searched newspaper archives and wrote a report on urbanization of mammal species through time in Helsinki.
